What's new

New Batch of Custom Razors

The first pic here is part of my supply of buffalo horn. It's in light and medium brown. Slabs are about 2.5 inches wide and not quite a quarter inch thick.

This second photo shows a small partial carved asian elephant tusk that I picked up in an antique shop last year.

This third pic shows the 10-inch piece of walrus tusk I have. I'm saving this for something special. Probably, it will go on a knife.

The last pic shows part of my wood stash. Maybe 15% of it. You can see the acrylic to the left. I've got yellowheart in the pile, along with purple heart, mopani, ebony, lacewood, redheart, and a host of burls in that back box that just came back from being stabilized.

I'm thinkin' I will get about 12 sets of scales out of the remaing piece of tusk.

Ok, then I must have the scale wrong in my head. I do agree that the Ivory may look nicer on something more petite. I would like to see it in something resembling a darker Havana or Tortoise.

OK, my vote is for the Buffalo Horn in the lighter color.

I know this is out of my zone, but what about a set of scales using a fine slice of ivory with a blue(ish) acrylic outer shell. Not so dark that you cannot see the ivory. Make the outer scale the acrylic and an inlay of ivory or horn. Buff the ivory/horn to where its got a nice shine to it, then place the acrylic piece over it.

so it looks like a manwich, acrylic/horn; razor; horn/acrylic.

Just an ideer I had.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, If I cover up the ivory with acrylic, I'd probably just use opaque white acrylic underneath. It would have the same effect, no? That way, I wouldn't be wasting some very expensive ivory. I could also just use some mastadon ivory that has the natural blue color already in it. Part of the joy in having scales in ivory is the "feel" it has, anyway. It just feels good under the fingertips. If it's covered in acrylic, how ya gonna know?

One more thought; think I should put plastic on a set of razors that just may sneak up on 2 large in price? Depending on how carried away I get with them, of course. :w00t:

All points taken, this is why, you sir are the creator and I'm the user. :tongue_sm

Hey Bill, what's that "Power Hone" machine I see on the bench there?
For sharpening these do-dads to be used on my engraving projects.

In case you were wondering... yes, it can be used to sharpen razors. I pretty much still hone my straight razors the old fashioned way, though.

Oh yes, I thought that might have been what it was for...scared me for a minute though, wouldn't want the old school ways to slip away...:001_smile
