What's new

What kind of whetstone is mine?

I bought it from eBay UK.

There is no information about the whetstone.

The seller only says he bought it from someone he knows.

He says he was serious about buying good tools.

[Whitmore] It's just a label

What kind of stone does it look like??

I think it looks like a yellow lake stone, but...

What do you think??

At first I thought Welsh slate of some sort, but the close up pics look too coarse. Has the same saw marks as a silkstone, but the surface isn’t right.

It's a Wood Box AB Salmen stone, it's just rebranded for sale by a toolmaker. You see this quite a lot, I've got a Dronfield (Marples) one for instance.
Could be, but the Salmen box is different, from memory, with the hole for the stone routed out of one piece of wood, rather than those inset end pieces.

But maybe they had variations.

I've owned dozens of them now, branded both for Salmen, and all sorts of other companies. It's definitely what it is.

You're right though - that box is a little different from the 'standard' one. But I've seen that style before quite a few times too.

I previously got a Salmen wooden number box stone, and I know it's exactly the same size as a Whitmore whetstone. I think it's the same stone as you said. My Salmen box whetstone is a type of limestone. It reacts to vinegar. The picture on the left is a Whitmore whetstone, and the other is a Salmen box whetstone. The Salmen box whetstone doesn't drain well... I think it's because the owner gave me a lot of oil. The box and the whetstone were dope in the oil. Is there a reason why the water disappears like that even though you keep draining it? Maybe it's the properties of the stone.
And if you look closely at the Whitmore whetstone, there are small particles stuck in places and they are glowing. Is it the same for your whetstone? I don't see any of these particles on other Salmenbox whetstones.

Just natural variation between stones. To my eye those bits look like larger mica formations; these stones are quite micaceous, which is what gives them the kinda 'sheen'.

The CaCO3 content can vary between them a bit as well. It's not so much that they are a type of limestone; they're a micaceous and sometimes slightly calcareous slate type affair.

Thank you for your reply. What a mica lump. When I touch both stones with my hands, the limestone siltstone whetstone feels smoother... though it's a slight difference...
Looking at the sides of the two stones, YLS feels much rougher. The Salmen Box Stone is very soft on the sides.
