Vintage Simpson Brush, Polo 12? I. Magnin & Co.

Recently acquired this brush and was having a hard time finding information on it. Wanted to see if anyone here could provide more information or perhaps confirm if this is a vintage Simpson? I don't have a set of calibers handy, but this is one of the largest vintage brushes I've ever seen, it keeps up with modern brushes so I'd estimate knot is 28-30mm+. A quick google search shows that I. Maglin. & Co was a high end store from California. Hoping someone can help out!

Hi, I don't think it is a Polo as it is closer to a Persian Jar. Could it be a Samson? Pretty rare if it is. Nice find 👍

I. Magnin was indeed a high-end department store. My Mother used to shop at the one in San Francisco. The City used to have some really cool stores like Gumps. A lot of these types of stores, like I. Magnin, used to be around Union Square.

Not sure, but I agree with my friend Richard. This rare brush is definitely closer to the current Persian Jar shape than to the Polo's. The knot looks in very good conditions and the butterscotch handle is just GORGEOUS.

The only thing confusing me is the size, the OP states it is "28-30mm+". The current Persian Jar models 1, 2, and 3, are 19mm, 20mm, and 24mm respectively which makes the brush in question very much larger. Maybe larger Persian Jar models were offered at that time or the store specifically requested them. The Samson is a larger brush of similar shape but as shown above that model has a groove around the base. So, it must be a very large Persian Jar, a rare brush I would say, and it looks to still have the original knot in fine condition, which is a real bonus. A wonderful find.
