Today's Toggle

Do these really shave any differently than a Fat Boy?
Or is it just that they are cool because:
1. they had limited production runs (like the Red Dot Fat Boys) thus making them more valuable
2. the toggle mechanism is unique and mechanically self-evident and thus inherently cool

I've only seen red dot Toggles Harry. Or maybe I'm just not following you??

Unless the red paint has flaked off, I have a an F4 with a black dot. I ask about a difference because it appears (to my poor eyes, anyway) that the black dot is smaller in size than the red dot.

Also, if you look at the last pic in post no. 11 above you'll see that the paint has flaked off from the dot and it's gold underneath.

If I can remember when I get home tonight I'll post pics.

Ok, here's the pics.

But all they did was raise more questions. Achim, Guido... help!!

My three Toggles, from left to right are F4 red dot, F4 black dot, D1 red dot
That's right, turns out I had a D1:w00t:

Close up of the F4 black dot and D1 red dot. The dot on F4 is clearly black.
And the dot looks smaller than the red one.

Here's the new question... Notice that the lettering and Gillette diamond are UPSIDE DOWN on the F4 black dot compared to the D1.

No, I didn't turn the razor upside down. :mad3:

Is this a manufacturing error?

Here's the red dot F4 and black dot F4 for comparison. Also notice that the numbers on the adjuster knob are not aligned either!

And the handle of the black dot feels thinner than the two red dots.

So... what can anyone tell me about these variations?

Harry,

You called something to my attention. I've got three red dots also, two Toggles and a FatBoy. On both Toggles with the razor laying dot up and handle pointing at the observer, when you rolled the razor up on it's head the print on the head is right side up. With the red dot FatBoy the opposite is true. Do not know if this is always true and consistent.

Your black dot Toggle is interesting. Do not recall even hearing of such a critter before yours. Weigh and measure it compared to a red dot if you get a chance.

Here are the weights:

D1 red dot 88.2 grams
F4 red dot 88.4 grams
F4 black dot 88.5 grams

Toggle for today just went for $108.00 on the Bay....Did I say I'm glad I got mine a month ago for a fair bit less?:001_smile

Interesting question Marc.

They are both cool tools.

I've shaved with both but not back to back. I think that could be a fun test.

Maybe do a Toggle on even days and a FatBoy on odd days. I use a blade for several days so I'll just more the blade daily. Sound like a fun test? Anyone else want to run a parallel test?
