What's new

the Rocnel Sailor thread

Phoenixkh

I shaved a fortune
Actually, perhaps someone (who has gone 'round the clock with the Sailor) could give me/us some pointers.

In a post in a different thread, I said, ride the cap, ride the gap, or ride the bar, relating how to adjust the exposure and blade contact. I know with the Stirling, anything but cap is getting into wild territory, the bar has no part in the (my) process, and the gap would be brutally dragging.

Much like a shavette, I know riding the cap gives a good range of effect. Is this what others are doing, or am I missing something?
@Chan Eil Whiskers tried a lot of gaps with his Sailor... Including the double clock setting, if my memory serves....You'll have to go back a while, but the details are in his journal.. and his journal isn't on the Journals and Diaries section.. so it's easy to miss...

I've learned a lot from Jim over this past couple years... He's a stand up guy and more than willing to assist anyone who asks:

Thanks for the compliment, Kim.

I'm 100% of the time a steep angle razor user. If the razor won't shave at a steep angle, I don't use the razor.

I found a pretty good razor stand solution for the Sailor:
Razorock polished stainless variable width dometop stainless razor stand ($15)!
I've searched high and low for a stand that would fit the Sailor and my WR3.
Both have extremely wide handles (Timeless handles too!)
This was the solution!!
The thinner the handle, the lower it sits and the wider the handle, the higher it sits.
Not a problem though because of the stands weight. The razor will not tip!
Now obviously the handle you try to fit might make the razor sit a bit inclined but it's not a
big deal. I just need stands for whatever razor I use on a given day!
It ain't perfect but it works for my intended purpose!
Here are some multiple pictures of the stand and with various razors installed of different widths
(Sailor, WR3, Guerrilla, Timeless, Sabre & Focus Tritok):

this is the same stand that I gave a few posts earlier and I have it and I drilled it deeper and brushed the outside of the surface to make it like a sailor's head cap.
post no: #855 , #890

Compared to the Osprey the Sailor is more efficient and more blade feel at the lower settings but the Osprey has more range with settings 1 to 9 instead of the Sailor’s 5.

If you're just starting out, keep the sailor rage at 2-3. Settings 4 and 5 should be used for 7-14 days growth.
You can go beyond 5 till a figurative 12 or so I believe but that will be at the cost of comfort

Many guys use exact settings on sailor but there are a dozen settings between 1-5....I frequently use 2.5 and 1.5

Beautiful! Let us know how it shaves. Looking forward to your review.
ROCNEL- SHEHERAZADE SHAVE

Three Days Whiskers

MUSIC: Sheherazade, Nikolai Rimski-Korsakov, Herbert Von Karajan, Berliner Philarmoniker, a 1984 editing from a 1967 recording.

PRE-SHAVE:

- Hot Shower

- Proraso Pre-Shave Cream Cypress and Vetyver

BOWL: SV Shaving Grail (IT)

SOAP: SV Desert Vetiver (IT)

BRUSH: SV. Ebony 2.0 Manchurian 26X55 mm (IT)

SR: Rocnel Sailor SS 2024 (TUR) -

My new toy is above all very efficient and smooth. Beyond its construction quality and finishing it is blessed with a touch of unmistakable artistry.
After this première it'll be - in its own right - among my best adjustables and top-tier safety razors.
I played a little with the clicks. And even used the Dot Mark (Zero) for under the nose - a very convenient feature.

2.5 - 3 - 4 for the 3 passes. And 1.0 XTG on Neck. Nothing was left over.
Amazing. I suspect there will be a tie between the Sailor and the Taiga. Due to my lack of experience on both that's all I can say for now.

I like the convex top cap of this version.
Ride the cap and you'll be rewarded in heaven's shave.

BLADE: Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum Premium - Black (INDIA) (1)

POST-SHAVE:

- 444 Alum-Block (PT)

- SMN Lozione Dopo Barba (IT)

- Vichy Homme Sensi-Baume (FR)

THE SHAVE

10/10. As simple as that. Period.

Indeed.

I've found I can get a much better than I might expect shave with the Zero Dot. However, my very sensitive upper lips demands a very mild ATG S-N setting. My 2021 MC Sailor Delivers that in spades.

To be fair, I have several other adjustables also equal to the task including the Taiga, the Muramasa, the Mergress/Opgress, the OliBlade, maybe others I'm not recalling at the moment.

Your photographs are beautiful!

When I first glanced at the photograph above I thought you'd acquired the world's largest and most beautiful stand for your new Sailor.

Congratulations and happy shaves,

Jim
