The Fatterboy

To be continued once I have it sorted and presentable...

lol what am I looking at? I definitely can't be left in suspense. You don't need it more presentable to explain!

This looks like some kind of AI generated extrapolation of a Fatboy.

I approve, whatever it is.

Ok, I am cleaning up all the grime on this thing right now...
Grime is implying you found that like that!

I really do like the idea though and really wish someone would made an english aristocrat/Barberpole style handle and TTO knob. I imagine with the right size brass tubing and knowledge on how to do the knurling it wouldn’t be too difficult. Then just have it plated.

Fatboy, Fatterboy, Slim for visual comparison.

Here is where things get extremely interesting. Fatboy vs Fatterboy. This is a screw Fatboy and the fatter has the crimped nipple but there is no Gillette adjustable with a stem that long afaik

And it is functionally identical in the head

Knob plate. It's all one piece and crimped as far as I can see under a loupe. The razor still has the quarter turn.

One interesting quirk is with the increased diameter of the adjustment knob that subtle tilt Gillette adjustable knobs have due to the spring is slightly more apparent.

The Proctor & Gamble chief archivist speculated that it may have been a product of R&D cooking up razors never meant for broad testing to test a specific performance parameter, this case potentially being a bigger grip for those with injuries or neurological issues. Also it wouldn't really be viable as it due to the amount of metal but meant as a test bed. "Instead, it was likely an early concept, model, or quick test platform, but I don’t think it ever got far. Even today Gillette digitally models handles and cartridge concepts that never see the light of day, some do get created, but never advance in testing – it’s an iterative creative process." So it was either that or some really bored machinist many many years ago had way too much time on their hands and all the equipment to basically match their level of finish. Also, the way the knob links to the handle is different and I can't get light through there to really show it. The adjustment is absurdly smooth given the torque advantage of the larger diameter. IDK if there is a different spec spring in there but that is smooth as can be as well..

That adjustment knob looks press fit onto the factory piece. Considering it uses a standard production Fatboy head and not a bottom dial or red dot type blade tray my gut is saying someone worked in a machine shop, liked his Fatboy and had some fun.

There's some sort of thinner sleeve inside you can barely see because it's quite tight but it's smooth and thinner than a fatboy knob. Whatever was done would have necessitated extending the central rod quite a bit.

The thing with the whole press fit deal is you could have done that with a regular central bar and had zero need to extend it all the way through. It probably would have been less metal too. Seems like a weird extra step to take.
