Supply SE question...

A friend of mine has a Supply SE in Matte Black that he's wanting to sell (he purchased the Pro model). I'm not sure I'm going to purchase it because I've got a couple other razors I like (Twig, AL13), as well as a couple vintage razors I picked up for $20 each (Super Speed TTO, Schick Injector J)...and I'm not even sure if the SE would/could be any better than what I already have.

Just in case I do consider the purchase, does anyone know if the razor is black throughout OR if the black will eventually wear off (leaving the razor part black and part some other color)?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I was able to chat with Supply and they said that, "It is Matte Black all through out the razor body and head. With proper care, the color should not peel or wear off overtime."

I would have thought it was a coating, but they should know. It's much milder than your Schick J, that's for sure.

I would have thought so as well...but that was what they told me so I'll take their word for it.

Thank you for letting me know that it's a lot milder than the Schick J I've got. I would have guessed they were similar from what I've read, so I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

The only SE that I’ve owned is the Supply SE. I really love it. Very mild, comfortable and easy to use. Does a great job even with a good deal of beard growth. If you’re after an extra close shave, then you’ll have to do 2 or 3 passes, but it works great for my purposes. I believe the Pro is adjustable, right? So that could work out great if your after a closer shave.

Thank you very much for the info on the SE.

I believe I saw in one of your threads you have used the Henson AL13. I have that razor as well (and a Leaf Twig). Could you compare the Henson AL13 to the Supply SE?

Again, thank you for you input on the SE.

The Supply razors are basically similar to the older injectors like your Schick in principle. Just a more modern design made for people used to cartridge razors.

Henson pros:
- Beautiful design
- Excellent knurling and grip
- Extremely mild and comfortable to shave with
- More blade options

Henson cons
- Lightweight if that bothers anyone
- Made of aluminum if that bothers anyone (titanium version available though)
- Most importantly, very narrow shave window, meaning you have to watch that angle
- Also, feels like it’s dragging or there’s suction on the skin when shaving, though no irritation or razor burn
- Best for daily shavers/minimal growth (at least the mild version)

Supply pros
- Very similar technique to cartridge shaving, very easy to shave with
- More generous shave window
- Seems like you’re just wiping away stubble (seems to do so more efficiently and slightly more comfortably than the Henson; for example, got little to no weepers from Supply when I put these razors head to head, Henson gave me the tiniest weepers over a section that had preexisting damage due to another razor/blade combo)
- Knocks down longer beard growth without issue
- Blades last way longer

Supply cons
- Big and bulky, not the best design, but still nice
- No knurling, but they do sell a silicone grip that helps
- Limited brands that sell SE blades (Suplly’s blades are great though)
- Doesn’t shave that close on your first pass if that’s an issue (they have the Pro model though)

@Bud2024 Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. That was exactly the information I was hoping to get. Fantastic comparison and it covered every question I had about the two razors.

Since I'm only about 7 weeks into wet shaving, something mild is definitely what I'm needing, so the Supply SE sound like a great fit. I've had the opportunity to try a couple adjustable razors that receive praise from everyone (Rockwell 6C and Parker Variant), but they just weren't for me...at least at this point in my wet shaving journey. I need a set aggression level so I can concentrate on my technique and not have another variable (changing a plate or adjusting a number) added to my thought process.

Again, thank you very much for your help!

One last question...are $59 for the Supply SE and $79 for the Supply Pro the regular cost of these razors?

I didn't know if the $59/$79 were Black Friday prices or regular prices. I know you get a stand for free because of the Black Friday sale on their website, but wasn't sure if the actual razor prices were cheaper than normal.

I read a couple times on here that the Schick injector blades don't seem to load properly in the Supply SE. Is this true? If it is, could you take out the Schick blades from the Schick cartridge and load them into the Supply cartridge (and then load them into the Supply SE)?

Thanks!

You’re welcome. I’ve heard there have been different versions of the Supply razor since the company began. I have never tried another Supply razor, just the currently available SE. All I can say is that I don’t think it gets nearly as much love as it should. Henson is rightfully mentioned a lot here, but the Supply SE should be mentioned in any discussion of mild razors. It’s the best one I’ve used so far IMO. I think previous Supply razors may be responsible for the mixed to negative reviews that I’ve seen in other posts because the razor I have is hard to hate. If I had to only keep one, then I probably would choose the Supply SE even though I love my Henson, too. My reasoning is that the SE can handle long stubble better, it’s easier to use, and slightly more comfortable.

As far as SE blades, I’ve only used Supply’s so can’t answer that question specifically. I believe that you get free blades when you purchase the razor and they last quite a while. Supply makes two kinds and there are a few other brands out there as well as has been mentioned. Forgot the names offhand, but I got Supply’s basic blades because they were recommended for sensitive skin. No complaints! Sharp and smooth. Last quite a while. Love the ease of changing blades. My two most used DE blades are Astra SPs then Feathers for reference.

Only 7 weeks of shaving and you’re buying all kinds of stuff willy-nilly. Pick a razor and perfect your technique. A great shave can be had with any razor.

I would keep the Tech and the Schick injector and be done with it. You have all the shaving equipment you’ll ever need.

I’ve only use one Schick blade in the Supply Pro. It was no problem at all loading.

Using the Supply cartridge in a Schick is problematic. The blade on the Supply cartridge is plastic and therefore thicker than the metal of the Schick cartridge. You have to either put the Supply blade manually into the Schick razor or you take the Supply blade out of the Supply cartridge and put it into the Schick cartridge. In either case you have to be careful not to rub the cutting edge on something which would dull it. But that isn’t really difficult.

I found ejecting several Supply blades and putting them into a Schick cartridge is easy
