Single Malt Scotch.Sugestions ?

The Woodford should be fairly easy to find...The Pappy 20 not so easy. I have heard that there is suppose to be another release soon..but I am sure that the retails will have them sold before they hit the shelves..I could have easily sold my Pappy 20 that I paid a little over $100.00 retail on eBay for $400.00..I wouldn't trade it for a toggle and that's a fact.If you are serious about acquiring a bottle of the 20 yr Pappy, get your name on the list with your supplier...this is something that I break out for very special occasions only...The 23 is over twice the cost of the 20..I would rather have 2/20's and the change, myself ;)
Good luck and thanx for the Scotch 411, too

Good luck

I just bought a bottle of Double Oaked - it was in the liquor store next to my daughter's orthodontist. She went in for her adjustment and I ducked into the store for myself.

As a reformed single malt snob, I'll say that there are some very good blends out there. I've recently developed a taste for Johnnie Walker red on ice - either they've upped the quality from the rotgut we used to get 20 years ago or my tastes have matured in a rather shocking direction - but Johnnie black is firm, long term favourite.

... if you like Glenlivet, which, frankly is a bit plain and simple for my taste but it's a good starting point Ditto Glenfiddich.

I agree ... JW Red or similar scotches can be very agreeable on the rocks (or with soda water) when you want a drink with friends or the tv, rather than "a tasting experience".

Also ... agree that Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are "okay" starting points, although I do find 'livet noticeably 'better' (rounder in the mouth & not nearly as sharp) as 'fiddich.

Just grabbed up a bottle of Laphroaig 10 (around $50.00 here )and poured my first pour. I keep looking for some smoked BBQ chicken..Wow, the Smoke is definitely the predominant taste that I get...with a long finish, too.
Got to try some of the others after I polish this one one off..:biggrin1:
thanks for the suggestions to all

Good to hear ... try their Quarter Cask as well!

Another peat and iodine addict is born. Try Lagavulin and Ardbeg if you like Laphroaig.

... and Talisker 10. It's from a different western island, and tastes different, but still something yo'd likely like.

My favorite (luckily because it is cheap for Scotch) and a very under-rated Scotch is Aberfeldy 12 yr old. It can be had from 35-40 bucks. Another great, but hard to find for me, is Edradour. It's the smallest distillery in Scotland and is another gem in the highlands.

Neither of these have the "slap you in the face" nose and flavor of an Islay, but they are just great sipping whiskies.

I haven't tasted the 'Double Oaked' yet..but intend to. Did I mention that I have a dog named 'Woodford' ?
Wish I could pif you a shot of Pappy 20, but them dang old 'Revenuers' might come over for Sunday dinner....
I'm sippin' a wee bit of that Laphroaig 10 as I type this. Starting to grow on me..I'm thinking it will be good for when I want a change up...

Speaking of orthodontist,
I swear to you this is not a lie. When I was a child, my uncle had a bad tooth ache on a Saturday. My dad got his dentist to meet us at his office that morning for him. After looking my uncle over, he said the tooth needed to come out. But for some reason he couldn't numb it that day...that was a lot of years ago and the reason why part was a fleeting memory...probably something to do with Saturday and no assistant, I surmise..I was just a kid. Anyway, he was going to have to wait till Monday to pull it as I recall. My uncle told him to pull it anyway..he was a tough dude but in a lot of pain. Conveniently, there was a State liquor store a firewall away. My dad went and got my uncle a bottle of some kind of whiskey. I remember watching my uncle downing quite a bit of that bottle in the dentist chair and told the dentist to proceed and pull the damn tooth. With my dad helping hold him down and the liquored anesthesia he didn't even seem to mind. Those were the days....I always thought of my uncle as a kind of John Wayne after that....I wept at his funeral many years later...and for me that is saying a lot.

Woodford, Try the new Larceny. It's a wheated bourbon from the Old Fitzgerald folks. A bit sweeter finish than Maker's. Hard to beat Woodford Reserve for a regular bourbon.

You might want to try Highland Park. Many bourbon drinkers (like me) like it. I'd find a bar with an extensive single malt collection and try some of the suggestions mentioned here. Much easier on the wallet in the long run.

I love full bodied peaty Islays and have visited most of the distilleries, but I'm not sure that's where I'd recommend starting out. However, who knows?

Thanks, I have them on my list.
BTW, if Larceny Bourbon got its name the way that I heard it, I definitely want to try it... ;)

I've been enjoying Glenfarclas 105 - I prefer to add a few drops of water to it, and then relax. Have had an issue with the corks breaking while opening 3 of the four bottles I've purchased over the past year, so open carefully!

this reminds me... MacBaren's tobacco used to make (perhaps they still do, tho I think it was a limited run) a natural virginia tobacco cased with Glenfarclas scotch. Glenfarclas in a glass is a bit sweet for me, but the tobacco was wonderful -a tongue burner but cased (flavored) quite nicely!

Currently have Glenfiddich 12, Laphroig 10, and Jura 16 in my cabinet. The Jura is by far my favorite.

Still on my list to try: Highland Park, Bruichladdich

A late post, but I have to wait 'til the odd lucid period. I happen to be a Laphroaig drinker, too. My current favorite is their 15 year. However they stopped making it sometime back. Fortunately, I stockpiled nearly a case when I heard of its coming demise. I intersperse it w/ the 18 year which is truly wondefrul stuff. Why mention this to a bourbon drinker taking the plunge, especially after my previous post? Laphroaig is aged in Maker's Mark casks! Yep, really.

Hey Gents,
I went to the L S yesterday and was going to try one of several other Scotches on a list that I have not tried yet. I had one in my cart and before I could get to check out went back and swapped it for another bottle of smokey old Laphroaig 10...I really wasn't sure what to make of this stuff on my first bottle...actually I was underwhelmed by my first sip ? Now, I spend another 50 bucks for the same torture  It took a whole bottle of it to get acquainted, but I find myself actually liking it pretty well......Actually I find it to be a perfect juxtapose to my favorite Bourbons. It paints a picture of growing up on the Gulf Coast and all the winters we sat around a bonfire on the beach ( smoky/briny) I like that.
Looks like I am definitely heading in the Islay direction ?

Thanks for all of the great info

Talisker 18
Oban 14

Wonderful stuff, but hard to find nowadays, no? I tried a couple of months ago, and came up dry. (Well, actually, I came up with a bottle of Talisker 10.)

Cragganmore 12 has really grown on me. Subtle, complex flavors that whisper "all is well with the world".

You might check San Francisco World Spirits Competition on the Internet; interesting results. Black Bottle which is a blend of Islay Malts has tricked many Scotch drinkers into thinking they are drinking a Singleton; also a double gold medal winner.
