Shaving Illegal in Wisconsin!

I was told since day 1 of barber school (currently three months in) that non-disposable straight razors were illegal in Florida. The state laws and a barber board representative told me otherwise, they are perfectly legal.

My school gives us shavettes in our kits and gives no instruction on honing, stropping, etc. 99% of my fellow barber students could really care less about doing full facial shaves. And even less students than that have any interest in using a traditional straight razor.

For me, the shavette vs. conventional razor debate is a matter of principal.

This Thread had me curious, so I spoke with a family friend who worked as a beautician while in college.

In Wisconsin, beauty schools can be either public (the local tech school or two year college) or privately run. Most beauty schools no longer include shaving in the lesson plan. The main reason is because most salons (the employers) don't allow straight or shavette use as a matter of policy; chalk it up to liability, insurance, etc.

This family friend went to school back in the early '80's and was trained to use a straight. The salon she worked for while in college did not allow the staff to use them. The only time she used them was when she did side jobs: cutting classmate's hair at their homes, shaves, perms or colors, etc.

Funny. I thought you were going to tell me that shaving was illegal in Wisconsin because making shaving brushes was depleting their mascot...

I asked my barber about a shave, and he told me that he used to do them but with AIDS in the 80s he and virtually everyone else stopped. He still has all the stuff, and I'm sure if I pressed him I could get him to do it, but I don't really like the idea of being his first shave in 30 years or so...

He specifically mentioned that they didn't have the kind of sanitizers they do now.
