How big is the dip bowl on that? Can't tell from the picture and description if it's big enough to bowl lather.

The Norpro is big enough for me to lather Williams in it, not to mention TOBS, Tabac, PSGT, and Nancy Boy. But perhaps I am comfortable in cramped quarters: I began lathering with a Mikasa tea-cup. Let's see... at the mouth the OD is 5-in, ID 4-in. At the base, OD is 3.5-in. ID is 3-in. The height is about 2.5-in, interior about 2.25-in. If my geometry isn't too rusty that would make it about 7.9 in^3, or 129-cc. It easily gives me enough lather for three passes and touch-ups, with enough left over to help rinse the stubble out of the sink.

If I could improve it in any way, I would try to add some texture to the inside, on the bottom and on the walls. I think this would improve its ease of lathering, and would definitely make it easier to remove the inner bowl from the outer vessel.

Thanks, mblakele. I'm currently using a four inch ramekin to lather in so that should be big enough - have to keep that in mind next time I make an Amazon order.

For the OP, I'm currently using a ramekin sitting in a pyrex dish for my ghetto scuttle. Works ok because of the volume of hot water I can put into the dish but there's so much surface area it cools a bit quicker than I would like. Point is, you can "build" a scuttle very easily to see if the warm lather is worth it to you before you buy a scuttle.

You know what' funny about that listing? It's listed as a ceramic dip server yet at the bottom of the page where you get the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" it lists Tabac, Proraso, a Merkur HD and Leisureguy's book. Seems we've successfully re-purposed this item.

lol! :lol::lol::thumbup:

maybe they'll re-classify it as a scuttle! lol

I'm cheap, I just stash my VDH cup thingie (comes in the VDH set from wal-mart) Inside a great big blue enamel metal mug thing from my old camping gear filled with hot water. Sort of nests, and serves much the same function. But I'm basically broke and can't afford a nice scuttle, nor have the counter room for it.

Now that is truly a "Poor Man's Scuttle". :001_tongu

What a coincidence, I just received my Becker scuttle tonight too! I haven't shaved with it yet but am looking forward to it!

I live in an RV full time and propane is needed to heat our water. It takes a good 1/2 hour to heat up and I don't always shower before a shave. So I use a hot pot for heating my shave water most of the time. I can set my lather mug in the hot pot but there is always to much risk of getting water in my mug in the hot pot. I really would like to get a scuttle

That is, in my opinion, the only claim to cool that the Norpro scuttle can make. I like that.

Self watering flower pots work well see my post my poormans scuttle they are $3 at wally world when their outdoor shop is open

I've got a dirtybird scuttle (the smaller one for face lathering) and when I pull my brush out for the 2nd or 3rd pass, the once thick lather turned to bubbles and is useless. You would think it was too hot, but it doesn't feel that warm on my face.

okay, so my earlier post's pic didn't show (at least not on my computer), so I'll post it again.

Used it for the first time tonight. It's approx 4" in diam. across the mouth, and probably just as deep. Works awesome! Still warm lather on the 3rd lathering :thumbup1:

Don't regret getting it for a second! (especially since I only paid 18 + shipping for it ) :biggrin1:
