Review: Merkur super double edge razor blade

Sunday 23-4-17 i have shaved for the first time with a Dovo shavette. I had a few small cuts in the neck, chin and below the nose.
I think that is lack of experience. The Merkur super double edge razor came with the Dovo shavette. Merkur and Dovo is the same German based company and as you know, German companies have always had a high standard of quality.
The Merkur razor can also be used in most safety razor models.

It felt weird the first time to put the razor on my face and it was a little hard to find and keep the right angle.
I believe that the Merkur super razor blades are like the name says, super sharp and also forgiving!
I didn't had the feeling that it cuts very easy into my face.

I will have to determine the amount of shaves that i'm able to get out of this blade and put this on the forum but it's different for every person.
Overall i must say that i'm very pleased with the blade. The shave was very smooth. Although i read on the forum that some people feels that the blade is dull. I had no problems with it.

The only legitimate downside to these blades is the price. A pack of 10 blades cost a little more than $9,50, equating to about a $1/blade. This is far more expensive in comparison to other high-quality blades, but if you can shave more with the same blade then its still an acceptable price.

This is definitely a quality blade that I would recommend to beginners as the degree of sharpness provides a little bit of wiggle room for error.

I will update this review as soon as i have more experience with the blade. Feel free to contribute to it and share comments.

I've never used Merkur blades, but it was mostly because of the cost. I would've tried them, and they could've ended up being excellent blades, but the cost was always the biggest factor against purchasing them.

I'm glad they worked for you and that they're not above your cost limit, and you've done a great review. Looking forward to the progress!

I tried the one that came with my new Merkur 34c. I got several cuts and thought it was a crappy blade. I used it I think twice and threw it away. Now I suspect it was probably poor technique, and I blamed the blade instead of myself. I have not purchased anymore as I've got plenty of other blades now. I might try them again sometime if I can come by a small five-pack.

I think that's part of the reason why certain blades have bad reputations: they come in combination with people's first razors and get tossed during the learning curve with disparaging remarks.

Some deserve that kind of treatment (ymmv), but others don't. I've revisited several blades that I thought were absolute trash when I first started and, although 95% I still view as rubbish, there is that 5% that I undeservedly disparaged.

Derbys are still my #1 worst blade, which I masochistically re-discover about twice a year, along with Dorco STP300s, and Personna Lab Blues. They never work, but the quantity I have on hand dictates that I have to throw one in occasionally.

I have read that a lot of people like the derbys because they are very forgiving and cheap. But if u have thick beard hairs then they are not suitable for you.

Most frequently I use Gillette Silver Blues. I typically get 8-12 solid shaves out of them and the price is good, especially considering I get a minimum of twice as many shaves for a handful of change more than the typical $10 for 100 blades.

My second is a sort of tie between Astra SP, Voskhod/Rapira, and Sputnik (or pretty much every other Russian/PPI blade). These are my "switch it up" blades, but mostly they just remind me of why GSBs are my daily driver.

I have used MERKUR blades many times, they work, worst thing about then is they are HUGELY over-priced. For that reason alone I do not purchase them any more. PS, I also have a Dovo Shavette and thoses blades when new are wicked sharp.

Do you use it as your main straight razor?

* Update shave 2 with the mercur razor blade: Had my second shave with the Merkurs this morning. It felt like it was pulling a lot more then in the frist shave. I had a 3 day beard (thick hair). Does anybody recognise this? What blade shall i try next? I think i'm going to use this blade for the 3rd time or i will just put it into the trash.

I don't get this. I must be living on a different planet than everyone else. Shaved today with a NEW Merkur Blade in my Muhle R41 Razor and got a WICKED close, close, close BBS shave with one pass, if anyone doubts this I will be more than happy to mail them my razor PLUS some of my Merkur blades to try, either I got the sharp ones and everyone else in the world got the dud's ??? or I don't know what .... I have heard many times that they are not sharp, do not cut, are dull ..... ??? please help .... I'm just not seeing thoses results everytime I have tried one

Update shave 3: You are right Mr Joe. Today i have shaved for the 3rth time with the mercur blade. And i got a better shave then the first time. So the conclusion is that i learn to shave better and create a better shaving lather. Now it didnt pulled very mutch. So for me i have used the mercurs for 3 shaves. Next time i go use and try it for a 4th shave. I think the mercur is a high quality blade!

I received a 10-pack with my Merkur Progress (w/travel case). Also got one with my Merkur 34c.
Used about 5 so far and always got good BBS shaves with 2 passes and a little buffing (using the Progress set at 2). I use all blades for a week so I've shaved a lot with them.

As others have said, they're also a bit pricey.

I am just finishing up the Merkur blades that I have and will not be buying anymore due to the high cost. Basically I am just tired of hearing how those blades are not sharp. I use them twice then throw them away but I am sure they are good for a lot more shaves than that. As I stated in an earlier post I rely defy anyone to put a NEW Merkur in a Muhle R41 and shave then tell me the blade isn't sharp. Only my humble opinion.

I used a bladed that was given to me from a fellow member.
It was a quite good blade, better than gillette 7 o clock green but worse than personna platinum.

I can shave 4-5 times with the blade. After that it pulls a lot. A lot of people are not fan of the merkurs. I would say its a good beginners blade. Sharp enough for thick hair and easily get 4 shaves with it. And for me it was not so agressive. Overall a good experience. Now im going to review other blades.

When I started to get serious about wet shaving switching from a Gilette Mach III to classic DE razor, I consequently tried a LOT of DE blade brands. I guess I might have a stash of 2k blades:wink:.

The Merkur blades have been some of the worst blades along this ride. I had some blades coming with a Merkur razor and I hated them. Because I read some loved these, I went and bought a fresh pack and gave them another chance. I hated them again. They won't get another chance in my face. There are too many options available that are much cheaper and give me a comfortable and clean shave. I would not recommend Merkur blades to anyone.
I love my Merkur razors, a Mergress and Futur. For blades though, go somewhere else.

Whats wrong with the merkur blade ? What blade do you use nowdays? Hating a blade is a feeling not a measuring point. ;)
