Razor TLC #9 GEM Junior Lather Catcher

This is a GEM Junior lather catcher with a 1900 patent date.

A good friend gave me this razor, with the hope that I could breathe new life into the old girl and put her to some use. The blade stops were just about nonexistent.

You can see here that the blade has cut all the way through the stop.

I made a "fence" so I could file away the old stops and go just a little deeper than flush to create a step to locate the new stops, and get my solder joint below where the blade edge would be. I want the blade to push on brass, not into the solder joint.

I needed some thin brass to replace the stops, I cut a 7.62x51 military case in half hoping to use that, but it wasn't thick enough.

So I used a brass putty knife that I've used before to repair other razors.

Working with tiny pieces was a no-go, couldn't place it, hold it, and solder it, just not enough to work with. So I soldered a bar all the way across and then removed the parts that I didn't want.

I know, looks awful!

Here it is roughed into shape.

Here it is with a hardware store blade in it just to see how it looks.

The stops are still a little high, but I'm gonna shave with it some to see how she does.

Does anyone have one of these with good original stops? I'd like to see how they're supposed to look.

TobyC I'd be interested in seeing the various tools you're working with when performing these repairs, especially for soldering such as when you repair the tube handles on other razors. I come across quite a few damaged razors on my travels and repairing the seems like a pleasant pastime

I don't have any specialize tools to work with, and I don't always use the same things. View attachment 684883 Soldering gun works well, soldering iron is inadequate, propane works. For holding the tube cracks shut I've used washers that I drilled out to fit the tube and cut,... I've never done two of them the same,... one I just held in a vise. Assorted files and emery cloth are a must. I don't have any dedicated fixtures, I just make what I need at the time.

I have a plan, but it may change once I begin working on it, I may start today. I need to replace both on that one too, the one that it has is almost cut in half from use.

You're more than welcome, and thank you again!
