Question for Pipe and Cigar Smokers

Retrohaling beer is not fun :)

 No, not at all.

Let me tell you what, though. If you learn how to retrohale air from your mouth while that same mouth has a good sip of beer in it, retrohaling a bit of smoke ain't nothing at all.

I retrohale both cigars and pipes. There are some blends that come alive when retrohaled for me; Nightcap being one that pops into my mind. I would say that I retrohale at least 20-30% of the time during a typical smoke, maybe as much as 50% when smoking Nightcap, FM Cellar, AF Short Stories. I get the most flavor this way and tend to retrohale slowly and gently, both to get more flavor and also to prevent the sting/burn that can happen.

PS. I do not like inhaling (into lungs) the smoke at all and do my best to avoid if possible. Though there is always a small amount that is inhaled since I clench a lot.

I hate accidentally inhaling, as I proceed to cough up a lung and wish for a swift death.

Thanks for the responses. Tonight I noticed that I definitely enjoy the cigar a bit more when I retrohale a few times. It helps me to find the true flavor of the cigar and allows me to enjoy the cigar a bit more once I focus in on the flavor. It allows me to then enjoy it while blowing out my mouth.

I will pay more attention when smoking a pipe. I believe it does the same for me just not as much as it helps me to enjoy a cigar. I'll have to try retrohaling beer.

Ditto all that, especially the 20-30% of the time, sometimes as much as 50% of the time. Something must be wrong with my taste buds because I get very little "flavour" from smoke exclusively in my mouth. In fact, for me, I don't consider the enjoyment I get from tobacco a flavour experience; it is at least 90% smell/aroma for me.

Guys, you don't have to inhale into you lungs in order to exhale out your nose. We're talking about doing a retrohale.

I know about blowing smoke thorough the nose from cigarettes and hookahs and such, but I was not aware that it could be done without inhalation. Interesting.

Yep, just close your mouth and blow out your nose. The flow will put the smoke right out of your mouth.

This is where the confusion lies. I had read from a couple of different sources that filling you mouth full of smoke and blowing out through your nose is a good indication that your smoking a pipe correctly and not taking the smoke into your respiratory system.

What is correct? I have inhaled the smoke and have retrohaled without inhaling. Correct is different for different people. By the way, with retrohaling, I will endeavor to explain the mechanics. You take the smoke in your mouth, then close it, and blow out the nose. Closing you mouth causes a lower pressure when compare to the air exiting your nose. That pulls the smoke out of the low pressure zone (your closed mouth) and onto the higher pressure zone. The smoke has to exit, and goes out the path of least resistance (your nose as compared to your closed mouth).

Any other ear exhalers here?

I've tried it but I find the experience mostly lackluster. Obviously it depends on the tobacco smoked, but I find that most VA's come across kind of bright and tinny. Perique always jazzes things up though, so there is that.

I had not heard the term 'retrohale' before. When I finally gave up a 36 year Camel non filter cigarette habit, 16 years ago, through pipe smoking, though it took 20 years of smoking both, I couldn't inhale pipe tobacco if I wanted to.

Too strong. As I learned to smoke a pipe gently, I would sometimes puff out a billow of smoke through my mouth, then lightly breath it into my nose and out again. If that describes retrohaling I'm doing it on occasion.

You basically just close your throat hole and push it up through your nose hole. :thumbup1:

Yep. You can use your cheeks and tongue to pump it up there, if you want to keep your throat closed off by backing up your tongue. You certainly can just keep your mouth closed and exhale through your nose when you are dealing with smoke, But do so gently. Be careful about doing just exhaling when you are evaluating beer, wine, liquor, food, or anything else that isn't gas, as it's pretty easy for something to find its way down while you are exhaling.
