New razor

Hi guys, looking for some advice on my next purchase. I started shaving with a str8 about 3 weeks ago and am really enjoying it, so much so that I want to buy a better quality razor. The one that has caught my eye is the dovo bergischer lowe. I like the shape of the blade and the horn scales if that's the right term, the gold wash on the spine looks nice but wouldn't bother me if it wasn't there. It has a Swedish stainless steel blade, I like that because I believe it's more easily maintained than a hi carbon blade. What I'd like to know is, is this a good razor, is it true about the maintainance and is there another razor You'd recommend preferably with horn

I'm pretty sure it's carbon steel blade and not stainless. It probably depends on your local environment but I haven't had any issues with keepin the looks on my carbon blades. Stainless steel is more resistant to oxidation, so it should be fine with a little less stropping, but I'm yet to have to rehone any of my razors, so I don't know first hand about how long they hold their edges.

There are mixed reviews about the razor, some people love it some hate it (how it shaves, obviously they liked the aesthetics enough to purchase it). So the only way to know if it fits the 'high quality' category for you is to try it.

It's gone quite up in price, classicshaving has it for $260 now and for that amount of money there are plenty of other razors that I'd rather have. But it's your purchase, so it depends on your preferences.

And yes, I do like horn a lot!

Would clove oil be ok on the blade, it's used on original katanas to protect them from moisture and it smells nice, just don't know if it would do anything to the skin, obviously not not an issue on a sword! Could you tell me of the other razors in the price range that u talked about or any that kind of look like this one. ie/ horn ,file work or unusual blade

I have 5 sets of blonde horn and 15 sets of black horn coming late this week. If you find a razor that you like and want it rescaled let me know. Peak through my threads to check out some of my past work. Best of luck, and isnt shaving with straights amazing

If you know it wont mess with the steel you could always just wipe it off on a towel before putting the blade to your face and problem solved . I can't really advise on anything but Ballistol and mineral oil as those are all I have used.

You probably want to rinse the oil from the blade before shaving anyways. You want some oil that doesn't go rancid. Camellia (tea tree) oil is good for the skin, it's very expensive (the real stuff, not the commonly found mixture that is mostly mineral oil). The old 1920-ish article talks about vaseline.

These would have to be vintage and when in excellent condition or really well restored (see for example max's work, or philadelph for stiffer grinds) they could end up in that ballpark, usually less. You'll probably like this Boker with horn http://www.straightrazorplace.com/forums/gallery/35238-h-boker-gets-new-life.html#post371422.

You're right! that abalone is stunning, liked the blade too, very like the dovo and without the gold. Thanks for telling me about that, awsome! U don't know what that sold for do you?

Actually I sort of know, but I cannot tell you, since it is not a public information, sorry :) The best approach would be to contact Max and I'm sure he'll help you.
