What's new

New Merkur Stainless Steel Razor

For the most part Merkur/Dovo is producing designs that are 50 plus years old using the same methods and technology.
.

Figure the Vision is much newer than that 50 year mark and every shave vendor is selling Merkur razors so would not doubt they posses the capacity to work in stainless steel, may just be a matter of time until most folks start demanding higher quality materials.

I love the thought of stainless steel safety razors razors.

I'm surprised that nobody seems to have found the link to the catalog. As for the new razors, let me be the first to comment with a heartfelt "Meh..."

I second that "meh".

I would like more information about the final razor in that catalog though. It appears to be red and black .. plastic?

It's hard to get excited about Merkur razors now that I have experienced the quality and craftsmanship of EJ/Muhle.

Thanks for the catalog. This is the new line up

Chrome black handle # 38011 Barberpole?

Chrome Stainless handle # 43002

Chrome black handle # 44011

Bakelite black red handle & case # 45030

I would be more interested in the Bakelite razor than the stainless handle.

Same here. Their stainless handle model doesn't do anything for me, design-wize. I sent Dovo an email asking for help to identify a US (ideally) or European dealer for the bakelite razor. Could be a fun addition if the price is sane.

Cooncatbob, you are no doubt aware that Dovo makes a few stainless wares - such as stands and straights. Merkur being a division of Dovo can no doubt take advantage of whatever relationships are at work to make such products possible. I only slightly doubt capability here, but heavily doubt desire.

SeaBee, you might be overlooking the recent difficulties what Dovo/Merkur faced with some of their suppliers and partners working at partial capacity, due to economic problems in Germany. Not to mention, the Vision and Futur are only a part of Merkur's lineup, not nearly has well loved (to my estimation) as the tried and true designs which borrow from their Gillette heritage. Finally, this new razor amounts to a decorative piece in the middle of last year's Barber's Pole razor and nothing more, so it seems they still lack either the desire or capability to do what PILS and Feather have done. But they're bringing Bakelite back, for whatever that's worth...

i like to hijack all these stainless threads with...

LUX!!!

seriously though, they're nice. true, they aren't in production anymore, but they pop every now and then on the bst or fleabay for pretty cheap. as far as all stainless razors go it's about the only one i can afford...

While I understand comparing one company's offerings to those of another, the tone of some of these posts leaves me scratching my head in confusion. Some of you guys sound like you're complaining that Merkur has come out with some new models.

Frankly, the idea that they're making a new stainless steel handled razor is a great bit of news. The news that they've come out with a bakelite razor is fantastic. No one has used bakelite in decades. I bet you have to go back the better part of 100 years to find a bakelite razor.

To my mind this is a good news story, especially in this economy.

I agree with you. I am always excited about new razors and models. I will probably get the bakelite as well.

I guess you can't read.
I said for the "most part", not including the Futur and Vision.
There's a big difference with casting zinc alloy razor heads at 800 degrees and casting those same heads from stainless steel which melts at 2700.
That difference is almost 2000 degrees in temperature.
Your going from melting metal at souped up kitchen temperatures to some serious heat.
This is a moot point since the announcement is the heads will still be chrome plated which means they'll still be Zamak3.
If Merkur/Dovo wanted to produce stainless steel heads for their razors they could find a shop there in Germany who could produce the heads for them.
I imagine that Feather is subbing out the production of their new razor, nothing wrong with that you do the design work then have a shop produce it for you

I feel even better about ordering a Pils now . . .

Or the Feather SS I just got. Phew! I don't need to spend any more money.

The heads on these new Merkurs seem to be the same as in their current lineup and they don't work for me. At least Feather designed a new head too.

I'm down with the bakelite too. The rest is pretty blah, kind of like a car maker "re-imagining" a certain model. Bakelite...Are you listening razor vendors? :001_smile
