What's new

Need further light after reading straight razor guide.

One way to get a barber hone that's lapped and ready to go is to post a request for one on the boards. It's hard to imagine a request would go unanswered for more than a day or so.

Another way is to send a PM to one of the more experienced members, and ask.

I am not a collector, but those who are often have duplicates they will unload (or even PIF) to newcomers.

Thanks everybody. Hopefully you can see how one would be confused. I just want to make sure that I take care of my edge as best I can. I will be having a honemeister put a shave-ready edge on it, but as I plan to make the attempt to use it to shave my whole head, it is possible that I could dull the edge quicker than your average face-only shaver.

So...it sounds to me like what folks are saying is that the 12k stone will definitely work, but is expensive to start with, and perhaps a barber hone is more cost effective way to maintain an edge, but those hones are difficult to come by and are not consistent.

So I'm still kind of stuck I guess.

Nothing against Larry, but keep in mind the size of those hones. It looks like the biggest one up there right now is 2 x 2. Because of the way a razor sits on a hone (the spine and the edge must both touch), your honing stroke can be, at most, 2 inches - (razor width). Personally, I don't know how one would use a hone that small.

Yes, honing on a 2 X 2 stone would be really interesting to say the least :lol1:

Possible, I suppose, but not easy by any means. I think 4" is about my limit.

I purchased one from him that was 2 x 4 about 3 weeks ago. I think that would be considered a full size Barber's Hone?

He had quite a few in that size at that time. Maybe all the recent praise being showered upon him, his stock is temporarily low.

My Swaty and Noxall were 5" x 2", which is probably the "standard" size.

You can get a nice shsing edge off a Norton 8K. Adding the 12k helps, but a pasted strop will help smooth things out off the 8k. I think spending $30(roundtrip total) is excessive when you can buy shave ready razors for that and then pit the $39 into a Naniwa 12k or Chinese natural. Either are all you need to add to maintain a straight indefinitely provided you do not damage the blade stripping or otherwise.
Get yoir razor honed by a pro, but yoi don't have yo spend so much money for one honing when others will do it for $15 total.
Good Luck!
