My review of Groom & Clean - unique to my own situation

For the last few years, I had been using different types of hair products - from gels, to pomades, waxes, pastes, and putties..and anything else that they may have been called along the way. Each had their own uniqueness along with positives and negatives. However, I began getting build-up at my scalp. Nasty stuff.

So, I decided to pick up some Groom & Clean. After reading reviews of it, I thought why not...couldn't hurt. I tried some and not quite sure what to think about it quite yet. It leaves my hair feeling clean indeed, and is very light in my hair. It keeps my hair in place all day and has a sheen to it. However, the hold isn't as strong as I actually like. Today, I supplemented with a bit of hair spray to give me that extra hold I prefer. But, the problem could just be my hair style.

My hair is thick, coarse, and wavy. I'm definetly not a brush and go type of guy. I HAVE to have stuff in my hair to make it look neat. For the past...gosh, could it be about 10 or so years already...I have had my hair in the messy look. Messy on top, spiked up in the front, and brush neatly on the sides and back. Know the look I mean? Anyway, I think the next time I go to my barber, I'm going to start parting my hair on the side and brush it over like I used to years ago. It's a bit more professional look. Now, if I get my hair done that way, I think Groom & Clean will be the perfect product for it and I probably won't need any supplemental hair spray or other product.

Do you use this product? What's your thoughts on it?

By the way, I like the smell of it....I know some people don't.

I really like G&C. At first I found it a little too light. It really depends how short your hair is. Now my hair is pretty short and just using a tad extra G&C will hold it in place. When it gets a little bit longer, like you said a touch of hair spray, or even a small dab of a stronger pomade always does the trick. After being accustomed to g&c and not partial to wax I've found a little bit of a water based pomade helps keep my hair soft(well, softer than strong pomades). When my hair is even longer I will use some waxy pomades as an extra hold. I recommend Upper Cut water based pomade and High Life Medium wax pomade(Made by DAX). If you like g&c another great product is Clubman styling gel. Very, very similar but I feel has a little bit of a stronger hold, plus the bonus of the fabulous clubman scent. Also, no matter what products I put in my hair I like to put a splash of Jeri's(without oil) in it to help keep all the kinks at bay and makes it easier to manage, also provides a little extra sheen.

Just as Guerreit2 says, I like G&C. I've used it off and on for years. One advantage is that it will rinse out with just water and doesn't require shampooing if you don't want to. It's also very useful in lifting away build-ups from other stronger products that don't respond to regular washing very well. I don't mind the smell but I'm sure some do. It works well with another product if you use things together. I've also found that a small dab will barely be noticeable whereas as larger amount can give a heavier shine and control. It's also very reasonably priced and it's been around for a few generations now. Overall - a great product!

I like to use G&C to clean out my build up. It doesn't have enough hold for my hair style, as I have thick, fine, yet heavy hair. It also gives my dark blonde/grey hair a darker effect..... which I don't care for. I like it more for the "clean" rather than the "groom" I guess.

G&C is all I have used for years and years. I cut my hair short on the sides (0-1/2) with a little left on top (high and tight) and the Groom & Clean is the only thing that I use to keep things ship shape topside.

I just tried this stuff and I have to give it a big thumbs down. I found the product to cause my hair to have a greasy look to it. I typically only use a very small amount with any hair gel but this stuff is now at the bottom of my list. It did ok in hold but the appearance of looking greasy is a major turnoff. I have short hair but it is fine. Will not stay in place w/o some kind of gel. I prefer garnier fructis (sp?) surf paste over G&C.

I find this interesting because I think that garnier surf paste makes my hair look and feel greasy, while G&C feels nice and soft with a perfect amount of sheen. Goes to show not everything works the same for everybody. Also I think it was last year? they reformulated surf paste and now it's a little more expensive and has, atleast to my nose a very unpleasant perfumey scent.

It must be a north vs south thing

What is it about hair between two people that causes split opinions? Reading reviews is kind of hit or miss sometimes. How can one person say a product is greatest and then another say it is the worst thing since squared wheels. I wish I would of taken a pic between the two different products but I am not sure that would have really helped. I could feel the difference between G&C and other things I use. It is just not the right product for me.

I wouldn't so much call it greasy looking, more like shiny? The stuff I used to use in my hair didn't have any sheen at all. G&C does. If you don't like sheen, then G&C definetly isn't for you. I don't care either way, honestly. Just want my hair to stay in place. I just happen to like G&C becaue it's old school, it's inexpensive ($3.96 at Walmart), and I like the smell.

I've used it exclusively ever since I gave up my long hair. It holds really well all day, without giving it that 1950's wet look that would be totally out of place for a guy who's still in undergrad. My hair can resist 30 mph winds with ease, without looking greasy or feeling hard, and it even looks like it's sitting a bit loose, almost entirely natural. Great product. I even emailed Suave to tell them how much I liked it.

I agree with this. I really like G&C and use it a couple of times a week, but mostly on Saturday and Sunday. I use DAX high life medium with DAX short and neat (for shine) early in the week, then let it build up a bit. The heavier products straighten my wavy hair, so that I can wear a modest pomp. The groom and clean "cleans" enough that everything washes out by Sunday night. Wash, rinse, repeat on Monday.
