Muhle Sea Buckthorn Puck Experience and Review

My first shaving soap was from Mühle. I tried them all. Sea Buckthorn and Aloe Vera are my favorites, the Sandalwood is quite nice too. When I bought my first DE shaving gear I bought the Mühle puck and the chrome soap dish from them.

After a while using the soap I have tuned in the procedure for producing a good lather with Mühle soaps. I add a bit of water to the soap dish and let it sit for a few minutes, while I do some other prep. Depending on the brush I use, I either just wet it for a short time (synthetic) or let it absorb water for a bit longer (badger). I don’t shake any excess water out but just squeeze the brushes lightly with my fingers. I then discard the water from the soap dish and start to lather the brush on the puck. Once I’m confident I have enough soap in my bristles, I move to my scuttle and start to produce the lather there. If needed I add a few drops of water as I go along. Sometimes I run out of lather for my second pass, then I just rinse the brush shortly load it again and continue to bowl lather.

I don’t face lather, so I’m not sure how to produce a well performing lather this way, but I would assume that lots of water in the brush should do the trick.

I used the Sea Buckthorn this morning. It was pleasant. Nice, light scent, felt immediately soothing on my face.

I did bloom it while I stropped my straight razor. Didn't have any trouble loading it. I do think that this soap produces a somewhat lighter, thinner lather than some do. It was a very good consistency for straight razor shaving in my opinion. Nice slickness. And I generally prefer a lighter, thinner lather these days. I do think it's easy to overhydrate it though, I ended up going back to the puck before the third pass because I had thinned it out too much.

I did cleanup pass under my jaw with an R41. I will say, I was more aware of the blade today than I usually am with MdC or Stirling Beeswax. But I didn't get any weepers so I'd say it's protective in spite of that.

Post shave left my skin feeling neutral. Not dried out, and not super-extra nourished. Perfect for summer, for my skin. I'd definitely use a balm to follow this one in the winter but I usually do anyway.

If you like a goopy, unctuous soap with tons of cushion and post shave conditioning, this probably isn't for you. If you want a lightly scented soap that peforms well and rinses clean, this might be for you. I think I'm going to like it quite a bit.

@Darth Scandalous Yep, I am now near the end of my puck, probably have 10 to 15 uses tops and I think your analysis is spot on. It is just a lighter soap.

Unfortunately for me it took me most of the puck to really get the lather I was looking for, but I did eventually get there with some consistency.

Of the three soaps I have used so far, it is last on the list on quality lather - I prefer a soap with more cushion. For me as of now, it is TOBS, Proraso, then Muhle. With that being said, I would definitely purchase again for the smell alone. I am also a big fan of their balm. That is a great product.

Like all Muhle products their soaps are top performers for me.

They have a cleaning action that is intended to remove skin oils and provide a closer shave.

I have three soaps in rotation: Muhle Sandalwood, Proraso red and Proraso green.

Going to try Sea Buckthorn when my Sandalwood runs out.

I have used the puck and the cream. Cream is now hard to find, but I found the cream lathered WAY better than the puck. I love the smell of sea buckthorn, but found the aftershave didn't have quite the same scent.

I'm a huge fan of Muhle's hard soaps 👍

Top spot goes to Sea Buckthorn or Aloe Vera.
Runner up for me is Grapefruit & Mint which has a nice and fresh scent.
In last place we have Sandalwood purely because thescent is nothing to write home about.
