Miles Davis...my eyes have been opened

"Kind of Blue" and "The Birth of the Cool" are wonderful, accessible albums. I highly recommend them. "Sketches of Spain" is excellent too.

Yeah, Kind of Blue is timeless. The Legacy CD release is very good, but I have to say the 200g LP version is my favorite. If you do get into it, check out the Analogue Productions re-issues of Miles' albums, either on LP or SACD. They're worth the price.

+1 to all of the above. Miles is almost hard for me to describe to anyone who hasn't heard him. You almost have to reply "Just listen"

Congratulations to the OP for your discovery.

For Kind of Blue fans, check out the book "Kind of Blue The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece" by Ashley Kahn. It's a very informative read.

Henry has said what I came here to say.

Also, it was no accident we named my first-born son Miles. Turns out, Miles was there for, ehm, the beginning of the whole thing.

Besides, have you ever known an uncool Miles?

I don't know what I was listening to...I do know I am going to go hunting for CDs to burn to iTunes...
You should start with Kind of Blue. It is extremely generic, but at the same time, it is pure genius. I feel the track So What can turn an ordinary person into a jazz lover. Give it a listen.

I love the music by Miles(even named a child after him). I always laugh when I think about how he used to call the NY police dept to let them know when he was going to be driving his Lamborghini around town.

His work in the late 50's to early 60's was superlative. Look at his albums: 'Round About Midnight, Miles Ahead, Milestones, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, and Someday My Prince Will Come.

+1. I too love just about everything Davis did from the mid 50s to mid 60s. Kind of Blue was the first jazz album I fell in love with.

After thoroughly digesting the first great quintet with Coltrane (on Prestige and Columbia, including Kind of Blue), I recommend checking out the second great quintet with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, and Ron Carter. Their live recordings cover some of the Coltrane-era compositions in a completely different style, and their studio recordings are revolutionary.

Big Miles fan. I am really partial to Bitches Brew, but I like most of his stuff. Please let us know when you figure out what it was you heard - curious!

I'm a huge Miles fan. The Prestige and Columbia recordings he did with Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley are classics. Relaxin' is my current favorite album.

Look for The Miles Davis Quintet, The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions. You can look up the provenance of these recordings for a lot of info. They include John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Unbelievable music.

Excellent recommendation! I like the "Workin with" and the "Relaxin with" the Miles Davis Quintet albums a great deal. What a cool cat :001_cool:

One of my favorite jazz musicians and I second the recommendation for Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain.

+1 He is one of the jazz trumpet players that I look up to, and try to emulate his early recordings. A fabulous musician (not to mention one hard man, he quit his crack addiction cold turkey!!!) and a great player.

I heard some Miles Davis music this weekend, and I loved it...it is like I was in a trance. I have no idea what song I was listening to, but I just loved it

Anyone else here a big fan of his?

Yes, I am a big fan.
The work with Gil Evans is great.
