Merkur Futur

I ready to try the Futur. I have one that should be arriving in the mail in a few days.
I enjoy a close shave, and have a preference for those razors that are considered more on the aggressive side.
I currently use in rotation a Fatip, R41 (2011), and Merkur slant, so am interested to see how the aggressiveness of the Futur compares to those other razors.

My next razor will be either the Futur or the R41. I'm not sure which one I'll get? I'll buy one this week, I'm leaning with the futur...

The Futur is infinitely more enjoyable to use and the shave is just as good if you crank it. It weighs a lot more as well

I'd have to agree. While some people love their R41's, I'd say the Futur is more versatile and less likely to be a "hit-or-miss" product, since it's adjustable. And set at 1, it's not as aggressive as people say, just nice and smooth, and the aggressiveness range is huge on the Futur. Sweet spot for me right now is around 3, but I haven't used my Futur enough to really know where I would end up.

I love mine, one of the best (if not THE best) DE I own.

It truly is a fantastic razor. I prefer maxing it out or dropping it no lower than 5.5. Amazingly smooth and irritation free. I love the weight and I've learned how to yield it properly. At first it's a slippery mess but then I began taking advantage of the bevel in the handle. Duh.

A very forgiving razor, at least compared to the others in my collection. I have a preference for large razors and the Futur certainly qualifies. I've had a handful of shaves with this razor (started at a conservative '2.5' on the adjustment dial) and have been rewarded with smooth, close shaves that allow me to skip a day if I wish. I'll start cranking it up to the higher numbers to gauge the aggressiveness & see how it compares to the 2011 R-41.

After trying out a number of other razors, I've settled on my Futur for pretty much every shave (except the occasional 37C when I've got a few days growth). However, I've never cranked it past 5... I think I may give it a try wide open and see what the buzz is about!

I create most of the buzz :). I personally try and see to it that everyone at least tries it. If you have experience with aggressive razors, the Futur won't be a problem. I can't imagine it any other way.

It's strangely smooth when you go past 6. I've found 4.5 is my perfect setting. I feel like the futur is well worth the cost, and it's my primary razor, these days.

bmilcs is selling the 6.5 for a reason! You need to try it out and see if it's for you

I bought a Futur just because it looks so damn cool. Shave angle is very different but once you figure that out, it makes for a great shave. I'm glad it's in my line up!

Also love the sound the Futur makes when you shave. :001_wub: It truly is fantastic, and I think everyone should try the razor, especially if you've already got a little DE experience and haven't given it a shot yet. I'm just hoping mine lasts forever. Anyone know what materials the Futur is made of?

bmilcs has me thinking, maybe I do need to give this 6.5 a shot...

I think they are made out of some cheap zinc alloy, but I could be mistaken. I'm sure the finish is pretty high quality, so I'm not concerned with the durability of the metal; however, I'm not sure how I feel about the snap on head. I'd be willing to be a merkur vision that my futur doesn't last forever.

Do it! Pay close attention to your technique and you'll get a great shave. 6.5 is just you and the blade

I also tried the Futur wide open... I think that will only work for me with a day or so growth... Maybe my technique is off a bit but it is a bit much for 3+ passes everyday (YMMV). I've gotta dial it down for the daily grind. Either way though, Futur has got to be one of the most versatile DE's on the market...

Despite my complaints about Merkur's poor quality control, the Futur is indeed a darn nice shaver. I'm finding it to be my go to razor more and more. It glides across my skin and gives incredible shaves.

My favorite setting is still a humble 1. I tried going all out at Bmilc's behest but ended up with a very irritated face. Although it could be due to using a new shave soap too. Maybe after a bit more I'll give the wide open another try.
