Looking for something akin to Eau Sauvage...

Hey all, love this forum!

I've just recently decided to start wearing fragrance again, and picked up my old standby Eau Sauvage to start. It still stands as my single favorite scent to wear, so that gives you an idea of wear my tastes lie.

I'm looking for a second scent to start a rotation, and am looking for additional suggestions to try when I make my run to Sephora in the next few days. I tried Eua D'Issey and Aqua di Gio, but found them both a bit too sweet and precious. I'd like something light, fresh, summery, possibly citrusy and/or aquatic. Kind of like ES, but not ES... If you know what I mean. I want the rotation to feel related, so it's not like I'm a totally different person when I wear one or the other.

So far I'm going to check out the following:

Azzaro Chrome, & Chrome Sport
YSL Gingembre
Bvlgari Aqva, Marine, Toniq
Clinique Happy for Men

The descriptions made these sound like they'd be worth trying, they sounded like the ballpark of what I'm looking for. I don't know if these are too pedestrian for such a sophisticated crowd, and I'm open to suggestions! Don't want to get laughed out of here... I would welcome thoughts and other recommendations .

I would highly recommend the GFT scent by Trumpers.

It's an amazingly long lasting and complex citrus scent that really wears well in the heat. You won't find it at Sephora but almost all of the preferred B&B supporting vendors carry it.

Can't really help with any suggestions, but I'm following this thread because I'm interested to see what people suggest - as it happens, I just bought a bottle of Eau Sauvage myself today, and I love it, so some of the suggestions might suit me too.

And I'm actually in a similar position, as I'm just starting to buy fragrances - the Eau Sauvage is my second acquisition.

I know you want something brighter for your second selection, but if you should ever want to go in the other direction and pick up on the vetiver in the Eau Sauvage base, I think Guerlain Vetiver (which is my other fragrance, bought last weekend) is fantastic.

Eau de Rochas Pour Homme - a pretty classy citrus, lasts longer than Eau Sauvage
D&G Maculine - if you like long lasting lemon
Art of Shaving Lemon Essential Oil - ultra long lasting lemon
Aqua di Portofino - if you can find it, a classy longer lasting version of YSL Pour Homme
L'Eau Par Kenzo - watery citrus, lasts a bit longer than Eau Sauvage
Aqua de Selva - a cologne, lasts on par with Eau Sauvage
Cerruti 1881 - a woody citrus scent
Versace Green Jeans - you may find it somewhere, a long lasting pine citrus scent.
Chrome - the only scent that has never let me down freshness wise, when doing the tourist thing walking around a lot in hot countries.
And there are plenty of others.

First, welcome to the fragrance forum! We're are not nearly as sophisticated as you might think, and you won't get laughed at or made to feel anything but welcome here. We are a very diverse group, from those just beginning to explore like yourself, to those who have tried more scents than the average person even knows exists, and we enjoy sharing thoughts across the board.

Since you're going to Sephora and looking for something very similar to Eau Sauvage, I suggest you try Dior Homme Sport. I think you will notice the similarity to Eau Sauvage right away.

Sephora sales associates are very good about generously providing you with samples that they will make for you in little spray bottles if you ask them, if they don't already have some pre-made by the manufacturer. I also suggest you ask for samples of Acqua di Parma Colonia Assoluta, Tom Ford for Men, Tom Ford Grey Vetiver, and Clinique Happy for Men.

And of course, let us know what you try and what you think of them and whether you like them or not. Great job of describing for us what you are looking for, by the way. Good luck!

Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions! Very much looking forward to checking these out! Thanks for the tip on samplers as well; I think my olfactory gear will tap out before I can make a decision if I try to sample all on the spot! Will definitely check back with my thoughts. Fun stuff!

Eau Sauvage is a classic. I love the citrus/rosemary opening with the subtle wood base. A very complex scent that changes dramatically over time.

Some suggestions on scents to try:
Acqua Di Parma colognia Assoluta- citrus with cedarwood base. Its good stuff.
D&G Light Blue
YSL Live Jazz- Underrated great summer scent...I use it on super hot days. Mint, lemon and grapefruit opening with a nice drydown. Does have coriander in it, so some people have complained it smells like Indian food . I like it though...its different and inexpensive.
Creed Original Vetiver-My favorite vetiver...fresh, clean, and great longevity.
Gucci Pour Homme II- Light and inoffensive. The black tea and bergamot notes make this an interesting frag.

I'm enjoying this thread too. I bought a small bottle of ES a few months ago, and am very happy to have it.

In hope of extending the discussion rather than hijacking it: I see that some folks suggested AdP Assoluta. I wish there were a scent that combined the 'clean' of the AdP with the wood of the ES. I find the AdP Assoluta to get a bit powdery for me. Any suggestions?

I find some similarity with Pens Blenheim Bouquet. BB starts off with a nice lemon and transitions to a piney evergreen. In between I get some very herbal notes that remind me of lemon thyme and thyme.

It is a fantastic summer fragrance, It just screams sophistication.
I would suggest Eau Sauvage Extreme, another great one from Dior.

Well, that was a bit of a disappointment... The Sephora I went to in Newmarket just had a tiny Men's section that wasn't very well stocked at all. My local Shoppers Drug Mart actually carries more options, I think. Nonetheless, I did get to try out a few different items that were on my list.

I tried Bvlgari Aqua, Azzaro Chrome, Eau D'Issey Sport (Intense?), Clinique Happy for Men, a couple of Ralph Laurens, Light Blue, and a couple of others. There was something in many of them that struck me as slightly generic and too similar across brands, I don't know if it's the aquatic element possibly. My nose isn't keen enough to be able to differentiate precisely enough yet. I did discover that I'm looking for a little more citrus and a bit of spice, possibly with some wood in the base.

The big surprise for me came near the end, when I tried Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. There was a light spiciness that I really liked, and it had a hint of tobacco that I really warmed to. It was near the end and my nose was pretty exhausted, so I got a tester to take home and try out tomorrow when I'm fresh. It also made me really want to try some Creed Original Vetiver, although I don't know where I'd be able to track that down around here (Southern Ontario). I'm also going to place an order for some GFT and give that a shot.

It definitely gave me a renewed appreciation for the uniqueness of the Eau Sauvage. I may even try to track down some ES Extreme. Between that, GFT (if I like it) and the Tom Ford Grey Vetiver (if it still appeals tomorrow), it may be enough of a departure to give me the occasional change I'm looking for. I'll definitely post up again after I've had a chance to get to know those scents more.

Not as good a bargain as yours, but I got a 100ml bottle a few days ago at a promotion at Boots (the UK chain) that effectively knocked 25% off the price, and I find myself topping up with quick sprays while sitting at my computer working - and I work at home in an office all to myself!

Could well be. I'm relatively new to fragrances myself, but I've noticed exactly the same thing - everyone offering generic aquatics that really don't seem to have any individual identity. I'm making it a general rule to avoid anything that's blue or has "Sport" in the name.

25% is still a great deal, yes although I agree you do have to reapply often, this is still a fantastic fragrance.

The base actually seems to last pretty well for me - but I keep feeling the need for a quick refresh of its opening notes!

Eau sauvage has been a long term standby. I have tried to replace it but either my wife did not like such as guerlain vetiver or I found the new cologne lacking in the simple quality of eau sauvage. I have two for you to try. The first is similar to es eau de rochas and the second is pretty good Cartier roadster.
