JabonMan Soap Review

So I decided to take the plunge and order some of the JabonMan soap from Manuel ([email protected]) after reading all the reviews online saying it was a must try. In my rotation I currently have MdC, Mike's, Calani, MWF, IK, PdP, and a few others, which all give a great shave. I emailed Manuel last week Monday, and my soap arrived yesterday from Spain. He is very nice to deal with via email, and I included in the emails a Catalan translation in addition to the English one as a nice gesture. I decided to order one tin each of the Lavender-Bergamot-Cypress, Wet Earth, Eastern Breeze, & Roses, and also received 4 free samples to try!

I tried the Lavender-Bergamot-Cypress for tonight's shave, and I can already see these soaps being at the top of the rotation for awhile! Although the lather pics are not the greatest, this was a super creamy, moisturizing lather, and rivaled Mike's as far as slickness is concerned. The scents range from very masculine (Wet Earth) to floral and spicy (Eastern Breeze).

Also in the mail was a new Thater 4125/1 24mm Finest 2-Band silvertip brush which replaced my three year old Savile Row 18mm 3318 silvertip brush, which has unfortunately fallen apart! Enough with the text, on to the pics!

That lather looks pretty good to me. Particularly the one where it looks as if the brush has just been loaded and has been worked a bit. Maybe just a bit too much water in the palm lather shot? I have not used Mike's but if you are sensing it is similar then I think Jabonman must be a very good soap. I love Mystic Waters. One of, if not the best shave soaps I have ever used. And I see users of Mike's saying much the same. So Jabonman is now on my radar.

Think about this chaps. Two years ago no one would have thought any artisan made shave soap would have challenged a commercial soap for equality, let alone possibly topping them. In fact, most artisan made soaps have been huge disappointments to me. Let me define artisan made quite narrowly. A one or two person operation ran from the home or garage and completely hand made to include saponification of the oils and lye to soap and the added scents. I am not including melt and pour soaps here. I have some of those like QEDman which are superb. Artisans in their own right but not exactly what I am describing here. 99% of what I have tried was not really usable. Mystic Water changed that for me. More and more we see Mike's, Jabonman, and some others emerging that are truly incredible, hand made toiletries that the old houses used to make but have now ceded. It is a good time to be a wet shaver.

Without lanolin:

- Ylang Ylang, Patchouli-Orange
- Vetiver-Tangerine-Litsea Cubeba
- Haitian Vetiver ....................................... (essentially very expensive, this is worth 12 euros)

With little lanolin: (pharmaceutical grade)

- Wet Earth.................... (a blend of vetiver)
- Marseille Soap ........................................ ( very soft)
- Violet

With more lanolin:

- Lavender-Bergamot Cypress
- Eastern Breeze ..................................... (myrrh-nail-cardamom)
- Eucalyptus-Mint-Tea Tree Pine-.............. (slightly minty, more lanolin)
- Coco
- Roses
- Lima-Pepper ........................................ (mint)
- Lima-Canela

Tierra Humeda roughly translated is wet/moist earth and I'm hazarding a guess that it is in fact a Vetiver of the damp forest floor/root cellar variety.

I've tried all three. It's hard to distinguish if one type is more or less beneficial than the others. They all produce a superb lather - slick, rich, provide excellent cushion.

Agree. The fragrances are complex. I think we have a preconceived notion of what you may be getting, fragrance wise, from the name of the soap, but when you actually pop the tin open or use the soap. . .it's pleasantly surprising. In detecting the notes, I can't say one over powers the others. A very nice blend.

We've all been there. I remember joining 2y ago, then scowring all the local CAD drug stores and shops for stuff. My wife thought I was crazy. I quickly found out, online is the way to go and purchased some Cella, then RazoRock, then QCS, the MdC and CF.....and so on and so on.

Jabonman is still on my list to try, but I have some samples coming from a B&B member who so graciously offered to send me some before purchasing (thanks Amir).

buying your 1st soap, is nothing to belittle, it's a proud moment and we've all been there.

My 1st ever wetshaving product was KMF Lavender and a 39c with a Wilkinson brush from WalMart
