Help Me Understand Blade Grinds

There are lots of pre McKinley Tariff near wedge Sheffield razors with smiling edges. There are also post WWII quarter hollow and near wedge quarter hollow / near wedge razors. These tend not to have smiling edges.

The only way to know how half hollow, quarter hollow and near wedge razors shave is to try them.

Here are some blade grinds. All of my razors are full hollow, but my S.K. Colling is a bellied full hollow, like the first one in the second picture. This "belly" is a horizontal stabilizer and it makes the blade stiffer. It is an excellent shaver.

I'm no "expert". I did write the book for the Spyderco straight razor, which I hope will be released late this year or early next year.

Wow, I had no idea Spyderco made a straight razor! Intriguing. Do you have any pics?

I like the belly in the blade. They look like they would stiffen up the blade a bit, not to mention that they look great too!

It hasn't been released, yet. It was supposed to come out this year, but they have been busy with renovations and enlargement. I think next year is more realistic, but they might surprise us.

Stephen Colling of S.K. Colling (AKA Prosperine Razor) in Australia (you can find him on Facebook) does an amazing job with his grinds. He uses the same steel as Ralf Aust and runs it hard.

Love the Clauss’ I have several, all great shavers. Good steel, nice grinds and finishes. Nice razor in great condition.

Edge keenness, honing trumps grind style. I shave with all grinds, all sizes and makes. A keen and comfortable edge is what I look for.

Yeah, I agree with your thinking.

I'm guessing as I get better at SR shaving, it won't matter as much what grind I'm using. I'll be able to handle them all. I might have one I like better than others but I'll still be able to handle all of them. Good honing and stropping along with good shaving technique will be the most important issues.

This is from the Koraat website and helped me greatly with understanding the spectrum of different blade grinds.

Note that Ulrik's nomenclature is a little idiosyncratic, probably due to the sheer range of the grinds he offers (or a historic interpretation). His Half Hollow is more a Quarter, and his Sheffield full is what most would consider a Half. Ask me how I know... :p
