Gold Dollar Mod Competition⎯Heads up

This constitutes your fair warning that on May 1 we will once again start the annual Gold Dollar Mod Competition. As many of you know each year we hold a contest to see who can make a beautiful straight razor starting with an inexpensive Gold Dollar straight razor from China. If you want to see what people have done before check out last year's entries, as well as the compendium from previous years.

The rules are simple. The construction phase starts on May 1 and ends on July 1. Please limit your entries to new work that you created during these two months. We’ll start a new thread to post pictures of your finished razors then. Entries must be shave ready in order to be considered. B&B members at large will vote to select the winners in each category.

Since the supply of unmodified Gold Dollar razors varies and may have to be sourced from overseas you may want to start looking for a few to bang on now. If you have any questions, please ask here.

I've never tried anything other than restoring old razors. Standard rust removal and some needed corrections are all I've managed so far.
Curious if I would have the perseverance to completely polish, scale swap, maybe alter the dimensions and shape...

Would a Gold Monkey qualify? I ask because I have several of those, but no GD.
I might take a swing at this if they're allowed. If I fail completely, I will ofcourse silently dissapear until all have forgotten I ever made this inquiry. 🫣

In the beginning we only allowed Gold Dollar 66 razors in the competition. After a few years, I believe when people had supply chain issues, we opened it up to all Gold Dollar razors. In that spirit I'm inclined to allow Gold Monkey razors. After all they are just another variation on the Gold Dollar. I don't know enough about straight razors to know if this would give someone starting with a Gold Monkey an advantage over the regular Gold Dollars. I guess I wonder, will it require less work?

Unless someone gives a good objection go ahead and use the Gold Monkey. Just keep in mind that only razor mods started and finished between May 1 and July 1 are eligible in the competition. Of course no one says that you can't do a practice run before then.

This will be an interesting and fun competition to watch. I am remembering especially after reading about previous competitions. May will not seem to get to me soon enough... hahaha..
