Gillette Super adjustable 84mm tips?

well i kind of figured that much. I was just wondering if anyone could compare it to any of the razors I mentioned above so that I could get a mild an efficient shave without getting razor burn and what not. I tend to gravitate toward mild razors. Im wondering if the 1 setting is too mild or if its just right.
I have never found an adjustable where the 1 setting was not too mild. In fact I think they should have started the scale on 3. But then 3 would be 1...

Anyways, on any adjustable I have tried, 3 is the lowest setting that is comfortable and somewhat efficient.

yeah after using it yesterday on 1 and then doing a quick third pass with 2 my chin was a little raw. Maybe I should have started with 2 so it was more efficient. Also I think I might try doing 1 pass shaves for a while. And shaving at night. The redness and ingrown hairs are starting to get to me lol I usually just shave WTG down and then ATG up but I noticed that most of my hair on my face and neck just grows down and then on my neck above my adams apple it sort of sweeps to my left. Weird. Anyways im still figuring this all out. I shaved with a henson mild for my first month of wet shaving and that thing is super efficient and very very good for sensitive skin. Older razors and different adjustables have more of a learning curve for sure. The only other razor that even compares to my henson mild but isnt as efficient is my merkur 34c

Hey nice work. This has been a good read. I'm still new, about ten months. I have the adjustables you're talking about. I haven't used them a ton, especially the Rockwell; it doesn't shave the same as the Gillettes, I wouldn't compare them. My Super is a 109 though. I find it is a little more efficient than the other two. I don't have skin issues, just a couple small irritable areas. The next time I use my Gillette adjustables, it's going to be in a couple months, I'm going to try settings (4, 3) for the Fatboy and Slim and (3, 2) for the Super. I've settled on shaving every other day, my skin seems to like that best. Good luck.

nice! yeah my trouble area is primarily my neck. My face looks generally amazing after using any razor really. I get problems under my chin and around my adams apple usually. I also just purchased a revamped fatboy aswell so im eager to use it. Every other day seems to work for me aswell and I think ill switch to shaving at night time to help the irritation clear up if there is any. How many passes do you do? which direction? I am still learning most definitely. Its not the same as cartridge shaving at all. I dont use my rockwell alot but when I do its usually setting 1 or 2 depending on the blade. I plan on trying my super adjustable at level two on a one pass shave ATG. I want to see if that helps because doing one pass WTG seems to be almost useless. It doesnt feel like it cuts anything at all until I do the second pass against the grain tbh. Not sure if anyone else shaves like that but maybe its worth a try. I dont go for BBS anymore I limit it to two passes usually with some small touch ups arond the jaw line.

I'm pretty settled into two complete passes. First WTG; second I go ATG on my neck, XTG on my face. Yeah, I think what I'm after is comfortable and efficient. Maybe some blade feel. Something like that.

Your stroke and pressure should be constant.

The trick for me was a certain combo of prep, and razor. Preparation is the biggest factor at play, then the razor.

Doesn't matter when you shave but prep is everything. I shower or warm water wash face until beard is soft then apply high quality shaving soap, slick, almost slimy. Shave WTG on 3 or 4, light touch, no pressure, 1 or 2 passes. Shave ATG on my neck where the hair makes a weird turn, extremely light touch since the blade catches the hair. I need 1 pass or a couple light scrubs. I don't try for BBS. I Never understood the appeal of BBS and my skin likes it better if I don't try to get it.

I rinse well with warm water. Hot water can swell the skin and cause ingrown hairs. Cold water is even better for sensitive skin. My skin feels a bit sandpapery after a few hours. At least for me that is a perfect result.

You see if I use a mild razor like the merkur 34C or the henson and I got WTG for one pass and ATG for the other pass I get an almost perfect shave I dont go for bbs after that. I definitely prep well. I even tried a night shave because I shower at night and I usually do a cold water shave. I use pre shave soap. And then I face lather with a brush. I went on setting 1 with the grain and setting 2 against the grain. The shave was not even close especially on my neck. I got lots of razor burn. Either its the razor or the blade. I even do some thayers and then after shave balm after wards. Theres definitely some factors going on here.

1. the razor itself (super adjustable) is too agressive on setting 2 onwards for my face and too mild on setting 1 and not very efficient.
2. The blade choice i made for this razor is absolutely terrible for my face
3. The razor has a steeper learning curve than the three other razors that do well for me with sharp blade combos(merkur 34C, henson mild, or PAA quantum razor, I get perfect DFS with these razors and a sharp blade like a feather or PAA platinum strangelet or a gillette nacet)

and because the razor burn was that bad I am going to use the same blade on friday night with a different razor and see if changing the razor does anything. I have many different blade options that may work better with the super adjustable however I dont want to change too many factors. I wanna find out if its the blade or the razor first. So I am going to use the same Gillette wilkinson sword(india) blade but probably with my henson to see if its the super adjustable thats causing the blade not to work. I have used this blade before with the merkur 34C and it worked fine. We are gonna get to the bottom of this because my skin is sensitive and honestly I know that not every blade works for every razor atleast for me.

I discovered that with some blades, particularly a Feather, the second day is better than first day. I believe some folks "cork" their blades prior to the first use. I guess that gives the same effect as one shave. Never tried it though.

Yeah I have heard of that before. Not sure if that applies to this particular gillette wilkinson sword or not. I have shaved with a feather before in my henson and I get the closest shave ive ever got with no irritation. On the flip side If I use one in my rockwell 6S on plate 2 or 3 it gives me razor burn. But I have also been following another piece of advice I had heard which is only using a blade for 1 shave if you have sensitive skin. Previously I have only gotten 2 or 3 shaves out of a blade before it feels like its not doing a great job anyways and I heard somewhere that if you have sensitive skin it might be a good idea to kick it after every shave. It also reduces the bacteria factor aswell. So idk the craziest thing and most beautiful thing about wet shaving is that there are so many variables that can change the shave. This is both detrimental but also amazing because it can make or break a shave. It adds to the customization of it all but it also adds to the possibility of getting a bad shave.

Lots of potential tips:

You need to find a razor/blade combination that works for YOU...For me, I have various razors and have limited my blade choices to Gillette Nacet, Gillette 7 O'clock Super Stainless (Russian Greens), Gillette Silver Blue (GSB) and Astra Superior Platinum (SP -green)...They all work well in all of my razors.

Adjustable...This is a trial and error test where you need to find a setting that works well you you, that works well based on your blade selection and based on which pass/area of the face that you are doing...YMMV (very much so)...The adjustment dial is there for you to "tune in" the razor for your preference...This replicates the Gillette Super Speeds...The mild one had a blue tip...The middle one had a silver tip...The more aggressive one had a red tip...Translating to the Super Adjustable, the blue tip equates to setting 1, 2 and 3...The silver tip equates to setting 4, 5 and 6...The red tip equates to setting 7, 8 and 9...With the adjustable, you no longer have to buy multiple razors, but can buy one razor and dial it in to what works best for you.

Here's a key...The Gillette adjustable razors provide a degree of audio feedback; during the stroke, you can "hear" the feedback of the blade cutting the stubble...You can hear how it's cutting...If you're not hearing it cutting, you already have cut away the stubble, or you don't have the "right" blade angle...Gillette adjustable razors need somewhat of a steeper angle (read as more emphasis on "riding the cap")...Too much cap, and you're not going to get enough bite...More emphasis on the guard will result in the same thing in the opposite direction...When you have it dialed in, you'll hear it...There's a sweet spot, and only you can find it...You have to hear it.

With these razors, I hold the handle way up by the adjustment dial...I can then place the blade exactly where and how I want it to glide...Precision vs. accuracy...Accuracy is all about doing something over and over again and achieving the same result...Precision is about targeting something specific and achieving that same result again and again.

As with all TTO razors, after shaving, slightly open the doors to allow the blade to release tension and allow it "room" to dry.

The Supers have a "drain hole" in the bottom of the handle...As it's a legitimate drain hole that has that purpose...It needs to be oriented vertically to drain correctly to avoid buildup in the handle.

Handle with care...Although Gillette's adjustable razor heads (Fatboy, Slim and Super) were manufactured using nickel-plated brass, their handles were not the same...The Fatboy and Slim's handles were nickel-plated brass...The Super Adjustable's (84, 109, Black Beauty) handles were manufactured using aluminum...Although brass and aluminum are both "soft" metals, aluminum is extremely soft, and more susceptible to damage than brass...The knurling on the Supers are more prone to "dings" as the pattern is black coated aluminum "bumps" that have a tendency to get dinged and show wear.

Before passing judgment on this razor, play trial and error in your blade selection and tweaks in your technique, and your adjustment settings before coming to a conclusion.

My toggle on '1' is more aggressive than both my red tips, and more than both Fat Boy's on 5.
YMMV.
It's beautiful; a small work of art. And efficient. Sometimes too efficient.

I have two identical ‘62 Slims, a ‘71 Super 109, and a ‘72 Super 84.

The Supers are imho better shavers - more efficient and less “scratchy”. Set at 4 and with a sharp blade, they shave similarly to a flare tip Superspeed, which is my favorite razor type.

I prefer the shorter version as it’s easier to maneuver and I like the balance better, but they both shave the same.

The Slim is a beautiful mechanical device, but I don’t like them as much.

I agree with you about the Slim, same goes for the Fat Boy! I have several 84's and 109's . A recent purchase of a re-vamped 109 with the plastic underneath, seemed to shave much more aggressively than the rest of my vintage flock. I believe they brought it up to factory standards which with my older, non revamped, the gap has slumped down to milder territory. Just a thought, when shavers review this razor, what is the gap, compared to the published, official gaps. May affect their opinion. My revamp works well on 3 where I used to use setting 5-6.
