Gillette Red Tip vs ...

Favor? If you have a Red Tip and an Aristocrat (or Diplomat or President or Executive), could you post a photo of the two side by side?

Thanks!

Not sure why you mention $115. Too much for an Aristocrat in my opinion.

The Red Tip was a lower end, regular workingman's razor when originally sold. The Aristocrat was much more money and came with a beautiful presentation in the previous decade -- more of a gift. Large quantities of each were made and the shave is pretty much the same. Whether you like the gold bling or red painted knob is purely up to your personal taste.

You'll need to get them all eventually. I'd hold out and wait for a nice cased one with the gold plated blade holder for well under $100.

That question is on my mind, also.

Depending on the year of the razors in question, I'm not that familiar with the Red Tip, but the heads are of a different design post 1947 I believe.

See my 1940 Regent below and my D2 (1958) SS.

Regent.jpg D2SS.jpg

Notice the shape of the safety bar and the guard span. The Regent has considerably more blade exposure and less gap. My SS with a Polsilver blade is a 3 pass shaver for a BBS finish that lasts 8-12 hours.

My Regent with the same blade is a 2-2 1/2 pass BBS razor and the shave lasted 23 hours.

As I understand it, the Gillette Red Tip has the same head as the SS, but has more gap making it a more "aggressive" razor.

The Gillette Red Tip was made only from 1955 to 1959. The Gillette Aristocrat was made off and on in various forms for many decades. It was "high end," and it was considered to be the intermittent flagship of the Gillette family of razors.

The Red Tip and the 1946-47 Aristocrat razors are perfect for my face and whiskers!

Oh, I just perused the 'bay; the Aristocrat seems to be priced over a hundred bucks more than a Red Tip. Lot of $. Thanks!

I found my Regent on there for under $20CAD and assumed it was an Aristocrat.

Deals can be had, but you need to act fast when you see them.

Most can be fixed, cleaned and polished back into great shape with very little work if you dont mind doing it. I will say however that you dont always get what you may be paying for so buyer beware, but you have a hard time going wrong with any vintage Gillette at the right price.

Most sellers on that auction site seem to hide the razor head, or display it in a fashion one cannot judge condition. Ugh.
Not only that, they also charge a great deal for shipping. Sorry, it DOES NOT cost almost $16 to ship a razor - even from coast to coast. Insurance - HA! It is already covered for $100 at UPS with standard shipping.

I went to the link that @nemo posted and found very nice Aristocrats all for under $100.
The trick is only pay what you are willing to pay, The $100 + shaves as good as the $45 and you don't need a gold plated blade bank to shave. best to try it first and see if you like it before spending way to much for a mint one that you don't use. Just a lesson I have learned the hard way.
