Michael Crichton wrote some great books, and Jurassic Park was one of my favorites. I still have first edition HC of both his Jurassic books. I also thought the first film was one of the best CGI films made. After that CGI was overdone, and the second film deviated too much from the book.
The CGI is great in the original Jurassic Park movie, because it's not CGI they used real dinosaurs. Ok, ok, "real" as in animatronics.

I don't have a funny description.
Not fiction, but rather stunning biographies of special units operators: "No Mean Soldier" by Peter McAleese and "Killing Zone" by Harry McCallion.

The Flashman books by George MacDonald Fraser are a great read.
Ribald and humorous, they are about a fictional character who is a coward with a knack for languages who through sheer luck continues to wind up a hero.
The history in the books (mid 1800's British Empire) is otherwise accurate.
12 books in the series, each one a treat.
Travels include India, China, the American West, Africa, the Middle East and the Carribean and Pacific Islands.
IMHO, they get better with each read.

After watching the BBC series “Zen” (3 stories) on DVD from the library, I read the eleven “Aurelio Zen” books by Michael Dibdin in sequence. An enjoyable read for me.

I too grew up on Fleming's Bond and am fortunate to have the whole series in print prior to the revisionist versions which were released this year. when you start talking about historical espionage and adventure, I can't help but think of the Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser. The amount of detail and research that has gone into the events of the day, and then the utter absurd humor of adding Flashman to the events is both exciting and hilarious.
I have all these on my Kindle and am working my way through them again while I have my lunch (unless I am with someone of course!). So well researched as you say and then throwing Flashy into the mix is just a great read.
