Collection update 2024

  • I had planned to do this about a year ago, but time goes quick so here we are 😅
  • Quite a few changes have happened to the collection. Less razors overall but more of the models I really like 👌🏼
  • 2025 will hopefully bring some interesting vintage razors!

Wow again!

I wonder how long pre-internet collectors would have taken to amass such a collection!
Definitely a good amount of time. Having said that it seems like some collectors have had great success when going to flea markets and garage sales. Especially when living in USA. Sometimes I wish I lived in another country. It's absolutely horrible for me since I live in Denmark 🙂

OMG Mikkel! This is superb! 2025 might be a fantastic year as well. I am sure you are in close contact with Achim? Supposedly he is selling his entire collection!

Do you shave with them? Or purely for your collection?

Enjoy the cabinets to the max!

Guido
Thanks!

I bought some razors from Achim about a month ago 🙂

I shave with a good portion of them, but I also keep some of them NOS. Mostly because I have shaved with a lot of the different models from especially Gillette in the past, so I don't need to try them again. Others I keep NOS simply because of rarity and value.

If we exclude the collectible and financial aspects and look at it from a purely practical perspective, which razor shaves the best in your opinion?
Greetings!

By the way, very good question!

I can't tell you which single razor is the best. After having shaved with a lot of different razors it's clear to me that the shaving performance is also dependent on multiple other factors like preparation, soap, blade etc. All the different factors contributes to the overall shaving experience.

To me a whole lot of razors from different brands fall into the category "adequate". Meaning I'm able to get a decent shave with them. Some razors do not fall into that category because they might be a bit too aggressive or too mild. With regard to razors from Gillette it seems that the different models in general got milder through the years. I have found some of the 'Old Type'-razors to be too aggressive/uncomfortable to shave with.

Maybe something like this: http://mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Old Type/1920 Pocket Edition.jpg

Other 'Old Type'-razors are just fine.

At the other end I might find a 'Tech' like this too mild: http://mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Tech/1966 Tech L1 Canada.jpg

Once again a whole lot of razors have the capability to deliver a great shave, so in my opinion it's important to think about other factors too. Like handle geometry, how it looks, history and then maybe rarity/value.

Do you want an old but affordable razor that can deliver a great shave then maybe an 'Old Type' like this:

Do you want a slightly less aggressive shave and a fatter handle then maybe choose a 'New Improved':

Do you want a milder and less expensive razor then maybe choose a 'Tech'-model:

Do you want a more fancy razor with a smart TTO function then maybe choose a 'Aristocrat':

Do you want an adjustable razor to vary the aggressiveness while shaving then maybe choose a 'Slim':

I could continue the list, but hopefully the examples get my point across. For me to suggest a razor I would have to know more factors than just "the best shaver" because to that I would say none of them. A lot of them are equally as good...

What I can say is that buying a great performing vintage razor or a new one for that matter doesn't have to be expensive at all. My most valuable vintage razors are not automatically the best shavers. Modern high-end razors like those from eg. 'Wolfman' are not automatically the best shavers either. Can they be great shavers and offer a good performance to many wet shavers? Sure, but so can a lot of other WAY less expensive razors...
