Car Totaled

That's a seasoned war hero alcoholic there. Jeez. My highest recorded so far has been in the .25 range. Most people will be unconscious at .40. Anybody I've had blow in the .2's has been pretty blitzed. It is easy to tell who's lying and who's not.

I thought you had drinkers in Texas... I've had a number of .20s that looked fairly good. Good being a subjective term...
We had a guy that was .44 and looked reasonably well (pro-drinker). My personal best was a .38.

The sad thing is that there is a presumptive limit here in California, but only for alcohol. I've had people buzzing on meth that the DA wouldn't touch for DUI. Go figure.

2-4' are common place for me. Oddly, it seems they ar in the 2 range our 4 range, not often 3. Honestly, most of these guys just act like a**'s. You can smell it on them but they are not stumbling or slurring speech at all. And then you ave the ones like the one I had Wednesday. Stupid kid went out for his 21st. Blew .12. He thought he could take the world. If he could have stood up, he may have. His drunk, but polite and no-problem girlfriend was quite embarrassed.

That's right! I forgot that providing a sample in Texas is voluntary, isn't it? I heard there quite a commotion when the legislature was considering making it mandatory.

You need to come out here and visit. Its mandatory to provide a sample. If you don't, that in itself can be used against you in court (and the DMV will take your license for the refusal).

I think you'd really like the CHP's attitude. If you don't submit to a test, they'll hold you down and take blood. Us? It has to be felonius before we'll hold you down.

Its the small things that make California bearable.

Yup! Texans like their booze. That would be nice. Lately though, particularly in the metroplex area, there are judges on hand 24-hrs to issue "blood warrants," enabling us to take blood if they refuse. Not just for felonies, either.

If you do refuse, though, your license is automatically revoked for 6 months.

Funny, pertinent story, this lady hit a guys car and drove off, so he followed her, yelling at her to stop all they way. They rolled right past another officer, who stopped them. It was off-beat, but I was close, so I pulled up to assist. I saw the victim's car, with the driver's side beat all to Hell, and then the suspect's, with front fender and bumper damage. As I approached the suspect vehicle, I recognized the driver as the woman who was arrested LAST week for DWI. She blew 3 times the limit. I wondered what she was doing still driving around. Needless to say, she was drunk again, H-bombing the field sobriety tests. She was a bit less cooperative this time, refusing to provide a sample. If the DA doesn't take this one all the way I'm going to pay them a visit. She needs to go to jail, as obviously legal penalties are not going to keep her off the road.

Funny thing, I had passed in front of the bar about 45 seconds before it happened.

and if that doesn't work, keep her there. I have absolutely no tolerance for drunks who get behind the wheel instead of calling a friend or a cab or keeping their ******* right where they are at. I've had not one but three family experiences with drunk drivers.

My brother and his GF passenger - hit by a drunk running a red light. Both vehicle occupants were taken to the same hospital. When my Dad arrived at the ER the drunk was laughing with his front teeth having been knocked out on his steering wheel. My brother had a broken leg, broken arm and his chin cut open in addition to multiple bruises. His GF -- both legs broken, cuts and bruises.

Second was Dad - a drunk drove his car through the double-glass door entry of a shopping center. Fortunately he had only a broken ankle, bruises and cuts.

My mom - was walking on the shoulder of a state road after car trouble. According to the accident report she was knocked out of her shoes and thrown through the air 73 feet from the point of impact. Dead at 52.

What would the drunk be willing to give for a drink in exchange for what was taken from me and my family? I kinow the answer to that, nothing.

Sorry to hear that Sue. That's messed up. I don't have any tolerance for these sh**heads. "After I blow can I go home? This is bullsh**!" Yeah, ok. Sit back down.

Why do you say "Poor girl"? It's her own fault; she wasn't wearing a seat belt. I don't think acts of stupidity deserve sympathy

I think I can feel a bit of sympathy for her actually. I hope her stupid mistake does not cause permanent damage and I hope she learns from the experience. I guess you might say I'm sympathetically reflecting on the human condition in general. From the stories we all hear of over and over again, there will always be injury and loss of life as a result of stupid behavior. It is a recurring shame. Certainly it is frustrating to lose material property value, particularly cool and expensive material, but being myself a personal witness of stupid and reckless behavior resulting in the loss of life and permanent damage to individuals, I'll always feel bad for the humans. No matter the state of their frontal lobe development, or bad decision making. It's all a sad shame. :frown: That said, I in no way am sympathetic to the behavior of someone who acts like an idiot and endangers the life and personal property of others. I don't have any tolerance for those that choose to drive under impaired circumstances. It still doesn't stop the loss of life or permanent injury from being a crying shame.

Hope that STi gets fixed soon!

That is such a sad story Sue. I'm not sure what I could propose that could possibly stop that kind of idiotic behavior from happening again. I've seen it myself, I just don't know what the answer is. (((sigh))) :a52:

There is no answer. Man's inhumanity to his fellow man is here to stay.

My dad was a firefighter/EMS and some of the calls he responded to belong in a fiction horror book. I'm sure our B&B law enforcement officers see the very same tragedies and loss of life due to stupidity, lack of responsibity and self-control.

My mom was killed many years ago, and I forgave 'her' (the college student driver) years ago but I was very angry for quite some time until I was able to forgive. My oldest son is the only one who has a few vague memories of his grandma.

I think we all have to try to be the best we can be and help each other or else why are we here?

Cant' you rent a car and be reimbursed by the insurance company?

Keep in mind you have to find a car for $15 a day or less if the coverage is included in the policy. Years ago I was an insurance agent and I actually urged my customers not to pay for that coverage the cost did not balance well with the payout.

If your insurance company has already said the vehicles are totaled, you could file the claim with your insurance company. Since your cars were parked, it is clearly not your fault. You will not have an accident on your record and insurance companies will nor be able to surcharge you for the claim. If the girl has insurance, your company will subrogate against hers, and they will have to reimburse your insurance company for the damages.

You are a bigger person than I. I am not sure I could forgive someone for that. My B-I-L, just got his second DUI within a couple of months. He has never had anything else on his record before, even a ticket. Now he has lost most of the custody of his son that he had just won, his apartment, his car, and the respect of his family. He, I believe, learned his lesson. I wish more did.

Poor girl? She was driving with no seatbelt on, and more importantly, not paying attention. This is all on her. Hopefully she learned something, and her insurance company doesn't try to screw around.

My thoughts exactly. ALWAYS wear a seatbelt. EVERYONE knows this.

My only concern for her is the condition of her dogs.

I went to an accident once where the dog hit the windshield so hard, I could make out the shape of its head in the glass. And when I say the shape of its head, I mean down to the depression in the top.

Funny thing was, about 15 people stopped to ask how the dog was and offer assistance. Not one person stopped to see how the two 70+ yo people in the other car were. Of course, Mark Twain might understand: "The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creatures that cannot."

The dog was stunned, but otherwise fine. Dogs seem to fare better than humans in crashes for some reason. Go figure.

Dogs have some thick skulls. They seem to feel no pain at times. They're pretty tough animals, especially compared to we frail humans.

Well, I have no news regarding her condition. No one said she was drunk nor if there was a cell phon in use. She did claim that her two dogs distracted her and I have to admit that is very likely to be the case. The dogs seemed fine and as plugged into this community as I am I would have heard if she were seriously injured.

I ended up buying a red Ford Ranger XLT. My only requierments were cloth seats, yeah this fat butt ain't about to sit on no vinal, and a/c beyond that I was in a cost saveing sort of mood, hence the red(not my first choice, though it does rate higher then black). I went with the red to save the 1100 bucks the auto tranny would have cost. If I went auto I could have had about any color I wanted, I think I liked gray about the best...

In all I'd have to say this lady did me a favor. I never really cared for the car she totaled but due to the insane amount of negitive equity, I was stuck with it. While no one would ever want something like this to happen, I should send her flowers in thanks. She is saving us about 300 bucks per month in car payments which can now go twords momma's debt and our wedding:ohmy:

That was an STI, man! What are you saying?! Seriously, though, it looks like it worked out in the end. And maybe she learned something(probably not). Like buy a pet carrier. People seem to forget that the main purpose of being inside a car is to DRIVE it. This one accident a lady stopped her dog from knocking her drink over, only to plow into a pole. Nice job. Thousands of dollars in damage is far better than having to clean up some soda.

Wanting a manual limited my choices at the dealer as well. I went with gray myself.

It was just a bad desision made by my friend, Mr. Happy. If I had to do it all over again I would have kept my 50MPG Jetta Diesel...

NO NOT THE STI!!!!!!!! Well I must admit I was lazy and didn't read any of the prior post, but if that thin is totalled - buy it back from the INS co and part I out. I know a couple of friends that did that with their VW's and made out pretty well, alot of people would pay money for STI seats, front facia, etc. What ever happens, I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune! If your going to get a new subie, don't waste your time on the STI, the WRX is faster.

With around 40 less hp, the WRX is faster? Since when?

I can't imagine there is much out there that is faster, that thing usualy left the paint behind when I was pushing it
