What's new

Brown Leaf Acquisitions -- February 2025

Planning to stop by the tobacconist in the suburbs tomorrow. I *need* some more tampers. I'd *like to get* some of their MM965 Match, some Early Morning Pipe Match if they have it, and maybe a tin of something new.

I'm not sure what category, though. Virginia? Burley? Latakia? I've come to like all three.

For a pipe this old…I would say it’s in pretty damn fine shape! Shank twists in nice and tight, metal and wood attractive, the bowl isn’t too bad, and there is just a bit of an unattractive bite mark that’s oxidized at the tip of the shank. I think light restoration work, and it’s gonna be a beauty!

You can get all 3 in one tin, just get a tin of C&D's Junkyard Dawg. It's their take on one of my favorites, the codger blend Barking Dog.

I'd be very lucky if either branch of this shop carried it. They have a few C & Ds, some Peterson, and some Mac Baren, but the emphasis there is on cigars. They have jarred bulks like PS Luxury Navy/Twist/Bullseye Flake, and a match for Peterson MM965. The rest are aromatics that are far too sweet for my taste now. Still, you never know.

If you are planning an order from Tobaccopipes or Cup o' Joe's any time soon, they are blowing them out.

For Valentine's Day, Miss Linda gave me an ounce of a blend called "Irish Creme" from that tobacconist I mentioned. It has a mild cocoa-burley aroma, something like Sir Walter Raleigh used to have, and is a ribbon cut. Still a little moist; it clumps. I'll dry some and rub it out for a trial this week.

No luck on the MM965 Match, not at this shop. I didn't care for the tin note of Luxury Navy Flake; and everything else in bulk was too sweet-smelling (boy, have I come a long way since I picked up the pipe again!). And their Peterson tins were $17 to $21 (!). They had just gotten in some Rattray blends, the larger yellow cans, and some small tins of Nording blends and others, but the guy didn't have them in the system yet, so even if I'd been inclined he couldn't sell them to me.

I wound up getting two tampers. On the good side, I found out both locations are open on Sundays at ten am, so I could stop by for a pipe then on a cool rainy morning.

Doesn't look like I'll make it to the tobacco shop today, either. The Annual Insanity, aka Mardi Gras, will intervene; there's a parade on the major boulevard a little ways south of the shop, and traffic will no doubt be snarled. It's insane of me to drive *anywhere* non-essential here until March 5.

That’s a bummer for you. If you know the owner, call ahead and ask what all they have and see if they’d be willing to set aside some items for you.
