What's new

Brave New World and 1984

I read Brave New World last summer by the pool in Jamaica. I loved it, but no more than I did when I read it in college 30-odd years ago.

Try The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil if you like that sort of thing. It's a little different, but still a fun read.

Utterly amazing!!

When it comes to lying liars, and inventing false history, American Conservatives could certainly teach a thing or two to Big Brother. Like your laughable propensity to ascribe made-up quotes to historical figures.

You assume I am a conservative incorrectly. I consider myself neither Liberal or Conservative. Just enlightened enough to realize they are ALL thieves, and I want any government constrained enough so as to let me pay my taxes and leave me the hell alone as long as I am not committing heinous acts of crime.

As far as the Franklin quote, neither you, I or the editor of the wiki entry were alive back then so who knows. I guess that part in Franklins Autobiography where he talks about the American Revolution being attributed more to the outlaw on colonial scrip, than the tea tax is false as well.

Both great books. I would throw in Noam Chomsky's 1991 non-fiction monograph entitled "Media Control - the spectacular achievements of propaganda" as a sobering analysis.

I am much happier since I tuned to the classical station or play cds in the car and avoid almost all sources of "news". Total denial and a fool's paradise can be a great thing.

I listen to an all jazz station for pretty much the same reason. It's getting really depressing out there.

Yep, big brother is watching.

Actually, C I A L I S is a word that is banned in order to dissuade spammers. Unfortunately it happens to be in the middle of another word.
:lol::lol::lol:
And what word would that be?:001_rolle
Do you need that information before your next date?
I have some Blue Bell Dutch Chocolate ice cream in the freezer. Maybe I'll go grab some (more).

:001_huh:

For one moment reading that I thought you said blue cheese & chocolate ice cream. :tongue_sm

leave me the hell alone as long as I am not committing heinous acts of crime.

You got caught lying.

I am quite sure most people reading this thread are enjoying the delicious triple (at least) irony of you using a fabricated historical quote to back up your assertions about the novel 1984.

Hold on there ... in both books the death of a pig is of central importance, and the dead pig becomes rather deified

If you think the pig is deified in those books, you have to go to Jim's house.

I figured I give you a little help there.

Never tried Cherry Garcia. Have had Chubby Hubby, the Steven Colbert flavor, The Heath Bar stuff, and several others. Ben and Jerry's is good stuff. I am not the biggest cherry fan though, so I have never been tempted to try it. Maybe it will convert me.

Yup, there are allot of flavors to choose from.

It is just great that we have the "freedom" to choose from all those flavors.

Still it is our "responsibility" to choose.

OMG:w00t:!

I just made an existentialist statement!

Ok, that beats my reading the works of Camus and Mann on the beach in Harvey Cedars (LBI) NJ, during the month lay about I took after the bar exam.

Dead pig is good eats! To risk re-igniting (re-inciting maybe) the political nature of this thread by mis-quoting Animal Farm, when it comes to dead pig some white meat is more equal than other white meat!
