Brand New to Coticules--Finishing on a La Veinette

Hi again everyone,

I've been dusting off neglected stones in my collection and was wanting to try out a modern LV from Ardennes. I've never honed on coticules before but I wanted to try this as a finisher, following an 8k or a 12k Naniwa Super Stone. I'm assuming since it's a coticule it's probably not fine enough to improve a 12k edge, but I'm hoping it should be able to improve an 8k edge nicely.

My main question is, when using a coti purely as a finisher, do you all use a trace slurry or just water? I know every stone is different and everyone has their own method, but I was just hoping to gather some data points to compare with my own notes/experiences.

I use just water.

I wouldn't expect much use for slurry coming off a 12k or even an 8k stone. Every coti is different, but even my ultra-hard and fine ones don't need slurry off anything near that fine.


I do know others who use slurry always with cotis because they prefer the edge that leading into a coti finish with some amount of slurried coticule work gives them. I don't find a real difference in a dilucot edge vs a coti finished after synth edge personally, but some definitely do.


But then I'm almost to the same point with slurry as I am with tape. Sure it has its uses, but I avoid it. If my stones autoslurry, ok... but I pretty much never deliberately slurry anything anymore. If I ever did, it'd probably be a Jnat with some Mikawa Nagaru... but I never much got into those either (even after I bought a set of em). I've found it's just wasted effort if you have good stones and are doing the level of sharpening/polishing they are suited for.

Back in the day I dilucotted to learn how to do it and once I was getting consistent finishes, pretty much never did it again.

Given the potential range of a coticule, I'd shave off the 8k to establish a baseline and then finish on water. Determine how much further you take the edge. Then maybe experiment with a very light slurry to water, etc. Coticules are one of those pursuits where the journey is an end in itself.

For me I would go from 8K to the coti and finish under a mild stream of running water to see how the coticule performed. This will ensure your only finishing on the coticule and will rinse off any free grit that might auto slurry.

I usually just use water, giving the stone a quick rinse every 5-10 laps.

For me, honing under running water is awkward, and increases my chance of dinging the razor on the faucet, and getting water all up in the pivot and under the scales.

I would take the razor all the way to 12K and use it. See how well it shaves then refresh it on the coticule to see if it sets the edge back.

I too am not a fan of honing under water. Like David, I’d rinse every 10 laps or so, razor and stone.
