$6,000 per student would not provide a functional education in some of our poorest performing schools in the South. A partial list of school expenses: heat (think about the square footage of your house compared to a school), desks and chairs, classroom supplies, books, phys ed supplies, teacher salaries - in NY you need a minimum of a masters in education, administration salaries - from superintendent down to your school’s principal, electric bill, transportation - both bus and drivers, librarian, music, art, phys ed, special ed staff for the students in need of that special help. And that’s just off the top of my head, I’m sure I’m missing quite a bit.

You seem to be assuming that all the kids come from families with enough disposable income to buy all the supplies. I taught in an inner-city school where more than a few elementary students came to school in the winter with no coat. The nurse (one I forgot in the above list) would keep a supply of donated coats in her office. They would try to get into school on snow days because the free lunch provided was so much better than what they got at home - most with a struggling single parent.

There is nothing wrong with asking where your tax money goes - everyone should. I keep wondering why we give oil companies annual subsidies in obscene amounts when their profits are so high? But your school budget should be easily available online. Mine is sent to the house every year. It will only take a little time and a little work to educate yourself on the budgeting need and process.

I also taught at an inner city/Title I school and all of this is 100% correct. The things my former students saw and experienced by the age of 12 would curl your toes - gang violence, domestic violence, friends and family being killed, drug use, and abject poverty so crushing you can't even imagine it. They came to school to be safe, get food, and be around adults who cared about them.

And the OP is complaining about buying school supplies? How about being grateful that your kids/grandkids/nieces/nephews/neighbor's kids are safe, healthy, well-fed, and have parents who can afford to buy them school supplies.

Well the one thing that has changed in the years since I was last in a K-12 School was Cops on campus, there only back in my time to teach or help teach a class, like Safety, or Driver Education.

Today most School in Big cities have Local Cops or their own Police Force on Campus, sign of the times. Glade I am not a student today, as friend some in cop at local H/Sw it is not easy duty.

You got that right, even small cities and towns have to practice their lock-downs. Those didn't exist when I did primary through post secondary.

Police officers in schools are not always about crime and safety though. They can also be in schools with virtually zero violet crime incidents. I grew up in a very nice and safe community, but we had police liaison officers in the school. It was more about public outreach and an opportunity for students and the police to develop a bond and understanding with one another. I can think of a number of times that the school officers would deal with a student if they got caught doing something against the law. They had a better relationship with many of the students, and probably resulted in the students being less resentful of authority figures.

Prove a set viewpoint is not wise. It’s a myth that public school teachers or administrators are getting “rich” off the system. Of all the things we fund or don’t fund as a society, we cut public education to our own detriment.

Teachers pay in my State is not good, many young Teacher are like those going into public safety.

After a short time they move on as the job was not like on TV, or in Movies.
