Antique Shop Finds

Mod please move this thread if it belongs somewhere else - I'm still getting used to 'what goes where'.

I just thought I'd share some photos of a few items I found today at an antique store. There was an old leather shaving box (in very poor condition) with a bunch of stuff tossed into it - They called it an 'italian barbers kit' but that was a worthless description. Before just walking away, I decided to at least look at the items. In the end , I made an offer, and it came home with me.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with these items - if i should restore them, sell them for others to enjoy, throw them away - but I thought I'd post some teaser pics for those who are interested, and obviously solicit advice of 'where these belong'. I'd hate to attempt to restore something that better deserves to be left as is for future owners to enjoy.

Anyways..... There were a variety of brushes, mostly in 'needs restored' condition

Barbershop Pure Bristle Austria (I think this is a boar brush)
Made Rite Pure Bristle 200TC (Boar I think)
Made Rite 203 (This looks like Badger, but I'm not sure) May even have a little life left after a bristle soaking
Rubberset 80 (not sure what this is)
Ever Ready IRREG 100 (I think, hard to read)

Some straights

E. Weck w/ what appears to be a plastic handle
Wade & Butcher - I believe this has a Bakelite handle
Wade & Butcher - engraved on the blade "The Unequalled & Justly Famed Patent Famed Back Razor" - Handle seems bakelite

And the really cool one

Imperial Razor w/ an engraving of William McKinley / Teddy Roosevelt on the blade... I think this was a campaign promo item?? Appears to have a bakelite handle.

Also scored a Gem Micromatic, a Clix DE with bakelite handle, a Gillette in pretty rough shape (it's all copper and looks like the plating is just all gone) w/ a bakelite handle.

Also had a playtex hair cutter, couple of small stones for sharpening, a pair of Hoffritz tweezers.. Pretty neat

Nothing too amazing, but it was cool enough to bring home. Should I restore the blades and brushes, or keep my bloody paws off them?

I'm happy with my score, even if only for display pieces. I'll attach some pics shortly.

The TR straight is very cool! Maybe everyone has gotten the quote wrong.."speak softly and carry a big straight"
Nice finds!

I'm surfing thegoldennib.... what is a two band?

...nevermind. The newbie found his own answer.

An eclectic mix for sure. Nice score on the butter scotch. I would take the worse brush of the lot and practice taking the knot out of it (and then toss it). Get the feel of the work before attempting the butter, although it will probably present a different set of circumstances. you will at least have an idea of what is like. With a new knot, that will be your favorite for a while.

It seems to be there is a lot of love out there for butterscotch. Is there a particular reason for that? Color? Size? Manufacturer? I've run across a number of posts where it seems that butterscotch is coveted.

Just curious.

Knot removal process has already been started... not getting there w/ a knife blade, these are gonna be drill-out's.

Restore the butterscotch!!!!! I think people love the butterscotch because it has a great vintage look that can't be reproduced. It is aged catalin, it was white before it turned yellow with age.

I had no idea it was originally white. That is a good piece of information to know.

..... knots will be ordered from Tony soon :)

Nasty doesnt begin to describe it..... Even a good shampooing couldn't get the hairs 'unstuck' from eachother... I was hoping to save the badger, but no dice.

I even tried the SWMBO's 'good shampoo'... no dice. Just too much mistreatment. But they shall soon see a new birth :)

Ok I've decided what to do....

As far as the small brushes go - All except the green and red are in line for new knots...
I'm going to either sell or PIF the razors, TBD in a few weeks.

.. My goal with buying these was to get them out of the antique store and to see the light of day... That's whats gonna happen !

Now to select which knots to order... Two band in Best sounds tempting, as do silver tips... I know very little about knots so this is going to be a learning process.

Good luck on your restoration projects.
