Does anyone know of a good source for Aluminum Chloride powder (15%-30%)?
If you're sensitive/allergic to sulfates you may be like me and get skin irritation on those (rare) occasions you nick yourself and use most common styptics. Main ingredient: Aluminum sulfate or a derivative. A good alternative, at least for me is Aluminum Chloride. Optimally I'd like to find the powder form because I really like the application of the Clubman's styptic powder.
Typical styptic compounds really irritate my skin and I found out indirectly that the aluminum sulfate was causing the irritation when I cut my hand and had it stitched. The wound started looking a bit angry (i.e. infected). I put a bunch of Neosporin on there and worked it through the stitches. My hand started swelling and getting more red around the wound in the next day or two so I figured 'worsening infection' and went to the doctor. After some diagnostics, he told me it was an allergic reaction to the Neosporin. Turns out to be a relatively common sensitivity, so now I use Bacitracin as an alternate. However the aluminum sulfate causes a similar reaction and the alternate is Aluminum Chloride and related chemicals.
A Pharmacist directed me to commonly available exceptions, Kutkit Styptic swabs and I just found CSI's My Nick Is Sealed product: both use aluminum chloride as the active ingredient. I can and do use the sulfate based products (I particularly like Clubman styptic powder) and I just deal with the irritation. The swabs aren't all that convenient to me and don't work that well mechanically (glass/plastic tube with swab on the end like a Q-tip - typically the swab breaks off when you activate it and then you're stuck trying to pour the styptic over the cut from a tiny tube). So I'm searching for a source or product using an Aluminum Chloride salt as an alternate in low concentration liquid or powder form 15%-30%. Antiperspirant is one -if you can find one without a lot of additional ingredients (possibly a homeopathic or natural brand, possibly Drysol and Certain Dri). Gingival Styptics/Hemostatics are another alternative although typically they're geared toward medical supplies and are crazy expensive. I might try a compounding pharmacy next.
I've searched a little, but if you all know of a source other than Kutkit or the antiperspirants I named, or can suggest something else I'd appreciate it. If not, I don't cut myself that much anymore and maybe I helped someone out there with problems/ irritation from using typical styptics.
Cheers!
