A food question for Clevelanders

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Are any of you familiar with Hot Sauce Williams? I have been wanting to make Polish Boys, but I want to try to get close to their sauce. Since I haven't had one since 1992, I need someone with more recent experience. Is there a off the shelf product at the grocery stores that is close? Have you ever made anything that comes close? Any help will be appreciated.

To anyone that is not lucky enough to know what a Polish Boy is, follow the link to make your cardiologist upset with you

This looks promising. I see why you want to make some sandwiches.

Seriously though, you could call them and see if they sell bottles of the regular version out of the restaurant and if they would ship them. A lot of BBQ type places do this.

I'd likely just pick up a quality brand locally made bbq sauce and try it with that first.

Yeah, will probably go that way if needed. The sauce is really something between a BBQ sauce (but thinner) and a hot sauce.

I grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland and even worked downtown for years. I've seen the signs advertising them but surprisingly I've never actually had a Po Boy. Since moving to AZ in 2005 I've never even seen one here.

I'll be going back for a visit soon, (unfortunately my Mother is in poor health), so I'll have to try one while I'm out there.

We have a local cheese steak place here run by a guy from Philly. I haven't found any polish boys down here, though.

I am all in!! I had no idea Cleveland was so cool! I'm gonna make some this weekend, the LA version of the Cleveland Polish Boy. I have some slaw marinating on the counter as we speak, and I'm due at the butcher shop where I can get my Polish sausages and pretzel buns. Whip up some BBQ and I'll have to figure how I'm gonna do the fries... I'll take pics. Thanks for the great inspiration, Owen.

There's definitely some very good food in Cleveland that you can't get anywhere else. We recreated some Mr. Hero Romanburgers that turned out great not too long ago.

The home made Pierogi's are outstanding as well, we used to buy them from a local Church when we were there. All of the older ladies would make them to resell to raise money for the Church.

We recreated some Bob's Big Boy burgers with their east coast sauce recipe. They turned out better than the original ones and the sauce was spot on.

There's tons of great food there.

I was going to cheat and buy frozen fries

A Romanburger will probably be the first thing I eat when I visit next year, followed by Arthur Treacher's. Big Boy's, too. I need to try making pierogies from scratch one day.

dfoulk- feel free to share your BB and Romanburger info if you want. I would consider it a slight derail into greatness.

I'd have to look up what we used to make it as we just got some buns that looked right, cooked some thin burgers, fried some salami and ham in a frying pan. Added the right cheese, shreaded lettuce, tomatoes, and sandwich oil. Everything was avail at the grocery store. I'd have to check the Mr. hero website to make sure I'm not missing anything but they were really, really good. It has been a while since we've done those and I don't think I actually wrote anything down. Still really easy though and pretty much self explanatory once you know what's on it.

I'll see if I can't find the Big Boy sauce recipe and post it as I know I have that one. It's even better on a higher quality burger made at home.

Great- thanks.

Bob's Big Boy sauce recipe - East Coast White Sauce version

1 cup Mayonnaise (I use the Kraft real mayonnaise and it works well)
3 tablespoons dill relish (well drained)
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon onion powder
1 dash paprika
1 pinch garlic powder

Mix all of the ingredients and refrigerate several hours. Stir before use. (Makes about 1 cup)

If you've ever had a cheeseburger from Bob's Big Boy this is what you want as it makes the burger. The burgers aren't not the best (thin fried meat) but this sauce makes them great. Adding this to a higher quality burger you grill at home takes it to the next level.
Like on the Big Boy style burgers I add this on a cheeseburger with some shreaded lettuce and pickles.

Thanks David. I would never have guessed about the paprika. Maybe we can get Aaron to put it in the Wiki

OK, so here it is...

I made the fries, slaw and BBQ sauce and got the kielbasa and pretzel buns at the butcher(they make the sausage in house, and who knows where they get the bread from, but it's delicious). I used tallow and yukon gold for the fries and I had a purple cabbage kraut fermenting on the counter, so I tossed in some mayonnaise and voila. I got to eat one and a half of these babies because my son couldn't handle a whole one. I also have enough to have another one tomorrow and possibly the day after that. I am pretty sure I have polish boy coming out of my ears(as weird as that sounds).

Once I get through the polish boys, I'm headed for the Big boys(burgers that is)!!

As an add on, I made this with leftovers and some egg. It's not a polish boy, but maybe some other eastern european lad? All I can say is this was delicious. No fries, but egg cooked in tallow and slaw and BBQ with a kielbasa. Inspired by this thread, so I figured I'd share.
