2025 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - The Battlestar Galactica Year

You could set a B&B record and become the first non-vendor ever to finish the year having made more from this hobby than they spent on it!
Just reread this comment and realized that I would never fulfill this prophecy. If you factor in initial cost of goods sold, there will be no profit. I always sell items at, or usually below, fair market value. For me it’s about getting these amazing items to a good home more than the cash. I have a lot of this shave hardware for a long time. And now it’s someone else’s turn to enjoy it. I may PIF a bunch of stuff too. And that will also negatively affect the balance sheet. I will just have to add a rule that participants of the Gruyère are not eligible to participate in any PIF I post up as per the rules. 🤪🤪🤪

Hi,

3D printing shaving items is the same as when I take metals in my machine shop and cut away everything that doesn't look like what I want. If I have the material here already, I am good. If I have to buy the material then I am out. Fortunately, I have a lot of material on hand and most shaving stuff is small. It's not like building a new race car or fabricating parts for antique farm equipment. ;)

As far as selling stuff, have at it! I have a few things I am going to pass on in 2025, but I'll set those up in the next B&B Auction. I don't have much left after all these years of passing things on, and none of them are worth much, so maybe some folks will gladly overpay for a good cause.

I am currently still in the 2024 sabbatical, and have signed up for 2025. Even so, the one rule I have wondered about is that of not entering PIFs. I fail to see the point. The rule eliminates a means of engagement and participation in community events. PIFs are fun.

Other sabbatical rules involve not spending money, or not getting others to do so on your behalf. That makes sense to me. Entering into a PIF costs nothing, and most of the time nothing is gained. What's the harm? I would be happy to stipulate that in the event of winning a PIF I would in turn run my own PIF to offset my gains. Would that help?

Don't misunderstand me, the rules are the rules and I will abide by them. But the best time to talk about the rules is before the sabbatical starts. I am curious whether anyone shares my opinion re PIFs.

Devil's Advocate: If it is acceptable to win a PIF provided you PIF something of equal value, is it also therefore acceptable to buy something as long as you sell something of equal value? They both amount to the same thing.

The difference is that in the PIF case no money changes hands. A better analogy is a trade, which is already allowed.

The rules make exceptions for forum sponsored group buys and purchases in the St Sue auction. These exceptions foster participation in the community. As I mentioned earlier, I think entering into a PIF is a case of participating in the community.

: You are allowed to trade for things you need in the event of an unforeseen shortfall to keep yourself in the restraint. Entering PIFs for things you don't technically need isn't the same.

An exception for group buys helps to gets the numbers up and make the buy feasible or secure the best options from vendors. An exception for the auction raises money for charity. Participation in these both benefit the wider community. Winning a PIF only benefits the recipient of the PIF.

Ultimately, the Imperious Leader will have to decide!

Agreed, and thank you for helping to further the discussion. Indeed, you inspired me to reread the rules more carefully. Here is what is said about trading:

"If you need something you may trade for it; that's why you are a part of a community that can help you out."

I don't do much trading, nothing at all in at least a couple of years. But I had been thinking I might want to do a bit of trading in 2025 just to get rid of some (fairly nice) items that I no longer favor. Now I suspect that would not be allowed under the spirit of the rule above. I had thought that trades were unrestricted. If that is not the case then I may need to rethink my 2025 entry.

Is it swell time?

Let's first do the easy one. As far as I am concerned trades are totally allowed. The "if you need something" refers to the fact that you cannot buy anything and it should be read in that context rather than as a stand-alone sentence. So feel free to be part of GRUYERE and trade whatever you want to trade.

If you actually want to trade the forum rules are that trades need to be done and processed through the BST. It is at your discretion if you want to trade only with GRUYERE participants or allow other brothers to also join in.
