Default how to use Slant bar.

I’m thinking of buying Merkur slant bar for smoother shave. How do you make pass with slant bar? Can you take V stokes or is just best to only use North to South stokes?

You use the Slant the same as any other DE razor. The slanting of the blade mimics a sliding cut in some regards. There is nothing special about using it other than being aware that one side of the razor has a bunch more exposure than the other so I am always careful moving it around my face. It is one of my favorite razors too - I am using it this week.

+1 Well stated..One of the keys in using the Slant IMHO is no pressure be mindful of blade angle and be prepared for a fantastic shave.

timm,

Good thinking!

Ever since I read your first post, the Slant and a Feather have been what I thought would serve you the best!

Good post. I have been thinking about getting a slant too. I figure it will do a bit better on those areas where the beard grows in every direction with fewer passes.

I am beginning to believe a Slant might be a very good razor for me as well. I will decide once I start my first shaves with the mighty Feather blade.

I don't like a Feather in my Slant. A middle of the road blade like a Derby works best for me. I do like a Feather in my Tech but not in my HD, so don't base your whole Feather experience off one razor.

Will a slant cut softer hair better than the HD?

A slant will cut just about everything in its path: hair, pimples, etc. If you drop it on the ground at the right angle, it will end up in China.

I've got a collection of razors now. I've got two non-adjustable Gillettes (I think superspeeds), one gillette fat boy adjustable, and my first- a cheap, no-name that I've learned is pretty aggressive.

I'm finding that the gillette non-adjustables take pass after pass to get an acceptable shave. I routinely use the Fat Boy on 9 and only back off for ATG passes. And I still love my no-name because of how quickly I can shave with it.

All of that and I've only had four or five nicks- all on pimples.

From what I've gathered, the slant bar sounds like it would be perfect for me. More aggressive shave with out being as scary as a str8!

Am I right?

I've said this before- if you use a chevron stroke with a slant, doesn't that turn it back into a regular razor?

The Slant is perfect for you because its perfect for everyone!!!

Seriously, I think of the slant as getting a smoother shave more than anything. You use less pressure, and still get a closer shave without the irritation.

But what happens if you put in a Feather? Does it go to Japan?

A slant works especially well, it seems, for the combination of a tough beard and sensitive skin. And it works best (in general) with a sharp blade. It will cut a regular beard just fine, too. Great all round razor.

I just got my Merkur Slant yesterday and had the first chance to use it today. In a word.... WOW!! What a shaver. It did just what everyone here said it would. With feather light pressure it plowed right through all the areas of my beard where the hair grows every which way. 2 passes and a few touch ups and I had a BBS first time out. That usually takes 3 passes with my HD. There will be a very short learning curve to maximize its ability.

Is it just my imagination or is the hair popping sound almost gone with the Slant??

I'm Curious, what blade did you use.

The Slant is it! I currently like it more than my Vision.

If you've got reasonably good technique, there's no need to fear the Slant.

As you tighten the head on the Slant, the blade bends to the perfect angle. That, plus the scything action, makes it a wonderful and unique razor. If you can avoid using too much pressure the shaves will be close and comfortable.

YMMV, RAD Likely, Member FDIC.

I love my slant, picked it up in an ebay auction two months ago with a bunch of gillettes. Thought it was too aggressive, sure looked scary so I let it sit in it's case for two months. Than I read this thread on tuesday and thought I'm gonna try it, just go slow and easy. Boy am I glad I did I got the best shave yet, bbs and only two passes and no nicks or burn. Used a sharp stainless blade and mama bear's lime oil glycerine soap. Oh" what a shave.

Clay

I have to say this AM I used a Derby in my Slant. Man what a BBS shave. AS close as my Futur IMHO. Also used the Alum Bar from the freezer per Michael's suggestion. Great shave AM all around.

You guys! I've been resisting buying a Slant, out of fear and thinking that nothing can beat the Vision or Futur for closeness.

Since I haven't had a scrape, nick, seeper or bleeder in the last month, and thanks to all the glowing reviews about it, I'm going to order one today.

To those who have both, does the Slant really provide a better, closer shave than a Vision can? If it does, that would mean that all I have to do is wave it around my face and the hairs just jump off out of fear!
