Talking BaldRick's Entry into the B & B Hall of Fame

Please allow me to introduce myself:

Username:

BaldRick

What is your real name?

Brett

What are your nicknames/aliases?

Baldrick, Balders, Frog, and other non-repeatable names

Not to mention the names my wife/partner calls me.

Where do you live?

West Coast (Te Tai Poutini) of the South Island (Te Wai Pounanu) – the home of Greenstone, of New Zealand (Aotearoa)

What is your age (or) generation?

Generation..hmmmm...getting older, unfortunately, but still learning new ‘stuff’ ... I’ll shoot for Gen X!

What are you in the real world?

One of ‘Societies Parents’.

What is your favorite shave setup?

Someone else doing it for me while reclining in an old leather covered barber’s chair.

If I have to do it....

Taking my time in the bathroom.....starting with a hot face cloth applied to my face before applying lathered up soap (at the moment; Geo. F. Trumper's Limes Shaving Soap) worked up in a warmed/hot bowl with a Vulfix No 10 Bristle & Badger Brush (a present, 8 years ago, from my wife)..... Then slowly and gracefully removed with my recently purchased Merkur “1904” Classic via three passes.

On completion of the shave, the brush dries on an Omega stand, the Merkur cleaned and lays proudly next to the wooden bowl of Geo. F. Trumper's.

I then employ a cold-splash/rinse/wash, then apply Nivea After-Shave Balm or an Avon After- Shave Balm, then later Nivea for Men moisturiser.

Yes...I like to take my time, and now really enjoy what used to be a chore!

What are your hobbies and favourite activities?

4 Wheel driving
Golf
Squash
Gaming (PC)

What else should the members of B&B know about you?

I have been shaving with a brush and soap – usually Palmolive (Mennen) Cream in a tube since I was 17 (30 years ago ). The razors have generally been whatever has been available through the supermarket, ranging from the ‘new’ twin blades, through to the more recent juggernauts of blades.

My current (8 year old brush) replaced my first brush, which I believe was a badger/boar mix as well, after it had served me 20+ years!! Needless to say, the bristles were a little worn. Shortly after replacing the brush, the handle slowly disintegrated!

I was never really happy with the shaves although I must admit that the original twin blade razors seemed to give a better shave than the more recent multi’s.

I have had a yearning desire to try ‘the old fashioned way’ for many years. Finally, in November 2009, I took the plunge via an online store here in NZ (http://www.mancave.co.nz/) and eagerly awaited my new Merkur. (still want to try a straight razor!)

I now look forward to my daily shave, and feel like I really missed out on something if I miss a shave.

I am now trying a variety of blades in the Merkur, as a sampler pack was the order of the day, to see which I feel is the best combination.

I also travel with a smaller Omega Pure Setola , together with a tube of Palmolive (Mennen) Cream and a horrible multi-blade. Once these disposables are used up, I have to consider another ‘real’ razor to put in my travel bag, or swap with the Classic. I am currently leaning towards either a Muhle R89, R106 or a Merkur Slant (37G)!!

Sorry to go on....I know this is a “Hi – this is me post” but I do enjoy my shave!

I have been with my wife/partner since 1999. (Thought I'd better add that bit or I'd get shot - or all my blades blunted )

Sorry, but I had to make a joke about the rain you get over there.
If you mean what I think about being one of "society's parents" it wouldn't be wise to make the usual crack about how much dope you smoke over there on the coast!

Not a Coaster by birth - am an import. Orginally from Christchurch

In answer to your suspicion above as to being one of "society's parents" - Yes, you are right....so, probably not to the last one.
