I have an old Iron Lung which I have modified with a de-humidifier to keep the internal humidity perfect.
I took part of an old air hockey table, and put a 30 HP blower on it, so that my razors rest on a cushion of air, and never have to physically touch the surfaces inside.
Once a day, a 3 man team of metallurgists come in and examine the blade edges with a 1000x handheld microscope, and they change blades whenever it appears that a shave might be rough.

Ok, so I had to get a bigger house to hold the Iron Lung, and the noise from the blower is so loud the neighbors are always calling the police, and the 3 man team is expensive, intrusive and I think they've been eating my Doritos, but man do I get good shaves.

Lucky,
Thanks I am still working on it. I am keeping the tie rack turned brush holder but my razors will be moved off the shelf. They will remain in the test tube holders. I will re-post my setup when finished.

Lots of good suggestions here.

I would like to add mine, which is to use a jar of 99% alcohol for dipping razors after a good hot water rinse. Just let the razor drip dry from the water rinse as long as you can stand holding the razor, then just dunk it under alcohol for a few seconds. The alcohol pushes out all the water - razors stay clean and blades stay rust free. Easy too: the lazy man's solution! Errr, the smart man's solutions!

I notice a couple of you guys said you hand strop your blades. Please excuse my ignorance but what do you mean? (I know that you use a strop for the straight razors!) And what would be the advantages?

Do you room for small shelves? This is how I accomodated my growing collection:

I lay my razor down on the wide side of the head. Now that you mention it though I'll probably start standing it up on the narrow part of the head

I remove the blade from the razor after every shave and stick it (lengthwise) to a piece of double stick tape I've got inside my armoire.

Well I only have one razor as of now, but if I had multiple I'd use the same blade between switch-ups.

For what it's worth, with my Merkur Progress I routinely change adjustments corresponding to how much hair I have on my face.
(I normally start the first pass WTG on 7, do the next XTG on 5, and then do a finishing half ATG half XTG type deal on 3.)

My post shave goes: In the bathroom, thoroughly rinse my brush, and my lather bowl until clean, shake the brush dry/bring everything back to my dorm room. Then I will remove my blade, wipe it dry (very very carefully) and store it on my piece of tape. After that I will completely disassemble my razor by removing the adjustment knob, and the top of the razor head until I have 3 pieces. I wipe those dry (and blow the water out of the handle) reassemble the razor (lightly securing the adjustment knob) and then I'm good to go.

That's a nice setup. Even with the reminder chart on the wall.

It's called hand stropping and is one of the silly things some of us do to extend the life of our blades. Dave Irving made this video to demonstrate the technique.

I obtained an old strop in a box of junk, and used it last night on a blade I'd already shaved with maybe 3 or 4 times. Hit it a good 10 times on each angle of each edge. Could be my imagination but it seemed to cut better than it had.
