John and I are moderators here, and our services are part of the board. Feel free to post stuff for sale if you want; if people are buying it should naturally stay near the top.

So its only moderators who can get a selling-sticky..

Thats too bad, we have a lot of member selling continusly that could use a sticky. And be of value to the community.. Easier for newbies to find..

Maybe we could have a forums 'menu' down the left side of the main page, and have the 'shop' there?

Newbies who need advice on what/where to buy usually ask. In those cases, I've yet to see one that didn't receive fantastic advice complete with links to the relevant other threads from the people that reply in the check-in area (or elsewhere). Lee's offers for forum members are a good example of this, and get brought up repeatedly in those threads.

We sure as hell don't need every post to become a "sticky".

Very few moderators have any stickies- it's more a matter of the thread being a long/well established part of the forum.

Having an important thread "stickyfied" helps folks find it easily. Having too many stickies (more than a very small handful) defeats the purpose entirely.

My understanding is that the stickies were for individuals, (not companies,) that provided a service that companies normally don't offer. e.g. decants of a number of different fragrances from different suppliers, breaking down packs of different brands of razor blades by hand to make a sampler, breaking down various shave creams from different makers and hand creating samplers, etc. These aren't services that suppliers readily do; if they did, our sampler makers never would have gotten into their activity in the first place.

If there are going to be stickies for commercial endeavors, I vote that the first three go to the three soaper Sues. But there isn't enough sticky space, and the admins have provided a shopping forum instead. I always check that forum. I think a commercial enterprise with different offerings and good service will always be prominently near the top.

There can be a tendency for stickies to be over used and start cluttering up the place. I've seen that happen elsewhere with the result being that the first page of the forum had very little on it that was new.

I think that in general, stickies are not meant to be permanent, people get tired of seeing them after a while.

Look, let's be clear. Just because someone sells a lot of stuff, does not make it a good idea to give them a selling sticky. And I think if you are thinking that LetterK and Scotto have stickies as some special privilege of being a mod, you are missreading.

Lots of people sell a lot of stuff. But it makes more sense to sell each item under it's own title, so the newbie or whoever that is shopping can see what they need, and click on it. It just does not make sense to have a "John's Doe's stuff for sale" sticky for everyone who sells a lot, because that thread will then have an assortment of all kinds of different stuff, and you would have to read the thread to find out what was there at any given time.

LetterK and Scotto provide an altogether different service. And it is a service, and part of what contributes to the overall value of the site. Of course, the combination of everyone's for sale stuff is also an important part of the site, but these two specifically are different. The reason is that they fulfill a need that newbies especially have, that is not filled anywhere else. John's blade sampler's are THE ONLY reasonably easy way to try most of the popular blades, in order to pick a favorite. Likewise, Scotto makes it reasonably possible to try a great variety of creams, aftershaves, and colognes for an affordable price. Trying to get samples from the companies to do this would be an enormous effort, and impossible for some products.

If you think you also can provide something of real service to the newbie and/or experienced classic shaver, feel free to post it in the sell/trade forum. If it really is something different than what everyone else offers, it will get attention and traffic. If it is something that is truly of the same special value as Scotto or John's offerings, it will be made a sticky sooner or later. But if you are just selling assorted shaving stuff like the rest of us, don't expect that.

Also, this really should have been posted in Forum Feedback.

I can't even imagine the time that Scotto and Letterk put into this. I have not ordered samples frm Scotto--yet. Some day probably. I have from John--he's great to work with--accomodating. They have become so important to the site and so many people learning more about shaving from them that if their every lead post were a sticky, it would be cool by me. I would suspect that if anyone else--mod or not--contributed to that extent and they wanted or needed a sticky--it would be granted in a heartbeat.

I agree with Moses but I just want to point out that the blade sampler and the cream samplers are going to be available pretty consistantly. If I had 100 40's Super Speeds in the same condition that were to be sold at a set price to anyone that wanted till gone then that would be different. You have a bulk deal that most newbies would be able to take advantage of.

However most razors sold are individual razors thus every sale is different, stock is limited and price fluctuates.

So no, not everyone gets a sticky but not everyone needs a sticky.
