Default Anyone try the Merkur classic 1906?

I have only used Gillette razors, a Super Speed, Slim Adjustable, and a Tech. Are the Merkur razors better? I like the looks of the 1906, and they appear to all have essentially the same head with different handles. Any thoughts?

Merkurs aren't necessarily better, but if you want to try one, the 1906 should be a good choice, though a lot of folks start with the 34C/HD as their introduction to Merkurs.

Are the 34C/HD a better choice than the 1906? I have been trying to replace an old Gillette Tech and they are just about as much as a new Merkur on eBay and at the antique stores I have been to, so I figured why nor just buy a new one?

It's all personal preference. I don't know what yours are so I can't say. You should be able to find a Tech in excellent condition for at least 1/2 of what a new Merkur cost. Try placing a WTB ad in the B/S/T:WTB.

The 1904 is a beautiful razor and a great shaver. Weight-wise, it fits between the Classsic (33C) and the HD (34C), so for those that want to find a good middle ground as far as weight, this is it.

Is the 1904 closer to a Gillette Tech or a Gillette Pocket Edition?

Well, it is supposed to be a recreation of an early Gillette, so probably the Pocket Edition, though that would apply to the open comb version of the 1904. The safety bar version is probably more aggressive than a Tech.

The 1904 straight bar is just a standard Merkur head on the 1904 handle, plated in nickel, of course. This is more aggressive than the Tech.

Got one and like it allot.

Shave is similar to a HD if not the same.

It does have a "fun factor" as it has that "classic" look.

I'm very happy I got one.
