Default Hones FS: Spyderco Med, DMT8 X & XX

The spyderco medium has been lapped, and is ready for use. This is a ridiculously hard stone. As hard or harder than barber's hones. It should give a lifetime of performance before ever needing to be lapped again. All it needs is a powdered cleaner and a scotch pad to wash the swarf away.

Model 302M $40 shipped CONUS, international will be additional depending on the country. Lapped.

No need to introduce the DMTs. They are pure lapping stones. X and XX.

    Asking for $40 for the X-coarse. D8X
$55 for the XX - coarse. D8XX SOLD

The Spyderco MED makes quick work at the 4K stage. Great hone.

Can't the DMTs be used for honing? I thought that was their main function. I need a couple of hones, I have a pipe razor sitting unused for want of a good hone-up.

The DMT's can be used for honing but I don't think you would want to use the X-coarse or the XX-coarse on a razor.

Well, you can. But I highly recommend you only use these for serious restoration work. They remove steel really quickly and leave huge scratch marks. So, unless your looking to remove a chip or fix a frown, I don't suggest using them on a razor. Although, the X isn't too bad, you could use it to remove some metal quickly to create an initial bevel, then finish it up with a different stone. That works pretty well.

Btw, the grit size for the X is 220 grit, and the XX is 120 grit.

would you recommend these for lapping a coticule and if so which one would work best x or xx?
    thanks,

How quickly does the XX remove metal? I have a 325 grit stone and cuts very fast.

Oh ok, I got these mixed with some other stones that were listed. I thought the x fine was 8k and the xx fine was the 12k

I have an X and it's really fast. I think an XX is for lapping only. The X you could probably get away with using for removing chips and frowns but I haven't tried. It's pretty abrasive. I much prefer the D8C I got for general purpose sharpening for that purpose. Taking a blade to the D8XX would probably feel like taking it to asphalt.

For lapping though I love my D8X. I couldn't afford an XX, but don't really miss that extra extra coarseness. I lapped a C12k on my D8X and it did admirably. I think I would have bought that D8XX for 55 bucks if it had been available though .

Well, imagine a divot in your razor the size of a small pin head. 1mm ~. Ok, if you bread knife the razor and its hollow ground, it would remove 1mm of steel before your favorite TV episode was done. I want to say 10 minutes, but it could be longer than that. Either case, compared to a 325 grit stone, its like going from 20 mph to autobahn speeds.

Oh, and someone bought the XX.

The Spyderco MEDIUM ceraminc is comparable to 600 grit . Not even close to 4,000 grit . This directly from Spyderco below .

"Our Sharpening stones are made of high alumina ceramic. There is not actual "grit" rating for these style of stones because a grit refers to the size of the abrasive particles in a sandpaper. A approximate "grit" for the Spyderco High Alumina Ultra Fine Ceramic is 2,500 , Fine is 1,200 and Medium is 600 . Thank you for your question.

That's a good price on that stone. Leighton's is $40 shipped and it is also lapped, which is a very important consideration with the Spyderco hones. They are take a long time to lap. As a comparison, I have the Spyderco sharpmaker and I have sharpened many, many knives on it, and probably 30 pairs of scissors and the rods show no signs of wear at all. My coarse water stones (325 grit, 600 grit and to some extent my 1200 grit) on the other hand show wear after sharpening a couple of knives and need to be lapped to ensure that they flat.

Did you email Spyderco about the grit comparisons?

    Edited to add:

I just looked at your recent posts. 7 posts in a row correcting grit size? Give it a rest.

DMTs are sold. The spyderco is still available. I also have a fine I can pair it with to make it more of a 4k/8k set. Asking $85 for both. Both are lapped. Playing around with some Tripoli rouge and some junky razors otherwise I'd have pics.

doesn't lapping these (spyderco) change them significantly?
i just read a post on the subject earlier today http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showpos...3&postcount=28
