When they smell like the creams I've used for the past few days and not like clean hair, I give them a shampoo.
I clean mine every week or two. I know ClassicShaving offers some kind of "brush cleaner", bit I simply use a mild shampoo. I'd imagine hitting it with a weak vinegar solution on a regular basis would be good, too.
I find that just washing out the lather during your cleanup works just fine. Every so often I'll wash my brushes with a mild shampoo and follow up with a conditioner.
When they start building a soapy residue between bristle and handle, I give them a mild shampoo
