    Default Horse hair shave brush??

I was talking to my mom today and she stated that my dad used a horse hair shave brush!
I asked her if she was sure it wasn't a boar or badger brush.
She said it was a horse hair without a doubt!
Has anyone ever used or even heard of a horse hair shave brush?

Many members have heard of them and some have seen them. This topic comes up a lot, actually.

yeah, horse hair used to be used.

It kinda fell out of use when it was found to be a vector of anthrax - thats why lots of older brushes say 'sterilized'

Oh... I'm sorry. I thought we were talking about the shaving brush m-g willy's father used in the past which his mother reported was horse hair and why perhaps horse hair brushes fell out of favor.

I'm a horse vet, so this is pretty interesting to me!
I use horse hair mecates, and the good ones http://mecates.com/mane_hair_rope_gallery.htm
are made from mane hair. I'm guessing the brushes are, too?
I'm definitely going to have to try one.

Thanks Mike, I must be one of the few that didn't know that.

The conventional barber neck/talc duster brushes are horse hair, as I recall.

How come badger hair absorbs water anyway? No wonder they are so grumpy. Every other animal's coat repels water. But every time it rains a badger is stuck wearing wet, uncomfortable "clothes." What would Darwin say about this one?

I had never heard of horse hair brushes until Alfred started stocking some, but his are actually a horse badger mix. I've actually been meaning to post a thread about it. Any thoughts on this combination?

Has anybody used one? What re the properties, I wonder. If they are anything like my horsehair boot brushes, I'm not sure I want them on my face.

Vie Long makes some pretty good brushes for shaving. I have three. Love them all. They are very soft and hold a good amount of water. They are a pain to get. I had to order them from spain. I don't speak spanish!!! but man they are great they are my favorite. Great with soaps good with creams. I have several brushes and the Vie Long horse hair are the best!!!

I'm using a Weaver Mecate right now and hoping to upgrade later to a good horsehair but of course it matters if my gelding stays in the snaffle.
