Well I'm new to this site and want to try staight razor shaving.
I have a question or two for the members. What brands should I be looking at,I'm all about quality. The other question is, is it hard to keep a straight razor sharp.

And hard, well you have to trim it with a... hmm that leather stripe, don't know the english name of it each and every day, but hard isn't the right word...

As far as your question, I've got over 30 yrs of your proposed method of shaving and others may not agree but for someone new, yes if you start from scratch. I suggest you purchase a "shave ready" straight from someone who can occasionally "touch it up" at first for you. After a spell you'll be able to go through the motions of keeping the edge the way you like it. Check out a forum which will tell you what you'll need at first maybe in some type of package.

Don't concern yourself so much with a high quality razor at first. The materials you will need to maintain the edge on the razor you start with is much more important at first. I have a 7 day set which today would run into the thousands.

Much of your enjoyment will come from being able to keep your razor "shave ready" and this will come in time.

Again welcome and check out the reviews and other forums. Theres gotta be a cumulative total of 1,000s if not 10s of thousands of HOURS in shaving experience here, (some good some not so good) But all real time.

Check out the straight razor subforum here on B&B. Also, you may want to check out the forum at www.straightrazorplace.com.

There are lots of stickies on the forums and subforums that will help you get started. Suggest you get a razor from someone on the forums that has a "shave-ready" razor; that may be a vintage razor that you do not pay more than $50.00. You will get just as good of a shave from the $50.00 razor that is sharp as you will get from an equally sharp $1000.00 razor.

Good luck in your new passion! It is certainly one that I enjoy.

welcome. if its a vintage razor, then its going to be good. if its a new razor, make sure its a Dovo, TI or Wacker.

Welcome to the B&B! I'll leave opinions on Str8 razors to the pros (I'm a DE guy).

Welcome, I just started using str8s and I love em, I use my DE's mostly but for my saturdays I use my Union Cutlery Special Spike, They are very fun to shave with, Yeah I said Fun.

EDIT: You may not want to go with a Spike first, they can be a bit unforgiving on the nose and ears.
