Hats

Now that we're getting our faces in order does anyone have any views on what to do with the top of the head?
Proper hats went out of fashion overnight in Britain in about 1971 and it hasn't really been possible to wear one since then (popstar inspired crazes notwithstanding).
I have several hats which I've acquired down the years to ward off sun or cold and I look equally stupid in all of them

Hats are slowly making a comeback. One simply needs to find a hat that suits him. I look absurd in a derby but rather like the way I look in a fedora.

I wear a hat daily. Fashion may come and go but style is forever.

What's the occassion?

I have been partial to Tilleys lately, but by far not a high fashion hat...

I think I know what a Fedora is, but what is a Derby?

I rather like hats, but have none. I would like to pick up a decent one or two for winter.

Derby I believe is like a smaller Fedora

I am going to do a Google search on this now :)

This is a derby. Note the rounded crown.

This is a fedora. More triangular crown with a dimpled top.

Sinatra is known for the fedora, while Charlie Chaplin is known for the derby. The derby is also very similar to the bowler.

Ok, the I can tell already. Derby/bowler will not work on me. Fedora will.

I also like Aussie style rancher hats. But what I need now is some to wear with professional attire on the way to work.

when out and about I wear a fitted baseball cap or my Stetson 10X Straw. Now that the holidays are approaching I will wear my black Lane Frost 6X made by the American Hat Co. But I have my eye on a 8X Stetson for Xmas.

Art Fawcett has made two custome hats for me and also blocks my panama for the summer...he can anything you can dream of... : http://www.vintagesilhouettes.com/

for the summer panama hats see Robert at www.panamahats.biz , he is an excellent guy, too. Great prices....and quality...

don't be duped by this guy named Charles Swindall aka the Gladhatter. Barry, a fellow member here was duped by this guy and paid twice as much for a hat that wasn't worth sitting on a second hand store's shelf. (read here: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=13694 )

There are other hatters over the country that will charge more and I am not saying they are not worth it, but in my opinion you best values are with these gentlmen....

check them out and if you have any questions, feel free to ask away...

best regards,

mark the shoe shine boy

be sure to look under hats in this section there are some new pics of sheppard and my new hats...

That's the killer. Being British anything to do with baseball or cowboys is a no-no anyway. Trilby hats and the entire Kangol range have been pretty much taken out in pre-emptive stries by rockstars Pete Doherty and the Gallagher Brothers. If you're young enough or old enough you won't care because you either want to fit in or just keep warm, but the years 25-55 are proving a bit of a hat wasteland.

Fedora's a possibiity I may look into though.
