Default 1919 Single Ring Travel Kit

I was in an antique store today and saw a wonderful piece that is out of my price range.

It is a 1919 Travel kit from gillette with a Gold single ring razor that looked in good to very good condition. The kit was a large leather box with a travel brush that pops up from a gold handle. There were two gold blade cases and another cylindrical gold piece that was probably to put cream or soap into. It all looked to be in wonderful condition and even had that original cardboard box that it was packaged in.

I did not ask for them to open the display case as I don't have $95 to spend on a razor so I could not tell how good the condition was but the leather box loked almost perfect and the two blade cases had some smudges but looked like they might buff to a perfect shine.

What is something like this set worth?

You mean kind of like this one?

Great condition? Well over $95 in my opinion.

Yes actually. In person it seemed even bigger but I believe that is the same set only this one had a second blade holder. Probably from another razor set.

Nice set but that razor is a Gillette New, not an Old Type Single Ring.

Was the razor like one of these?

Yes that is the one! The one labeled 1921 Standard Combination set.

does the set come with a gillette travel brush? If the gold plating on the set looks good and the leather case looks good then I would said it is a fair deal.

This is the only Gold Travel Set that I have. It's actually called the Cavalier.
    Not a single ring though.

These photos are very helpful. I have a travel set that looks like the 1921 Standard Combination with all the pieces except the razor. I've been wondering what goes in it exactly. The flip top is no longer attached and it does not say Traveler on it. I presume I'm looking for a gold single ring to put in it.

B&B is always a wealth of information!

I just located a complete 1921 Standard Combination set. There are no serial numbers on the razor. It appears in excellent condition.

So any price around $95 is good? (As noted in previous reply)

Keep in mind he is saying it has the original cardboard shipper too. That adds substantially to the price if all in really good shape (detailed pictures are would aid the call of valuation). If in as good of shape as you make it sound, and everything is original, I'd say it's a reasonable price. Maybe even better. (Subjective even then, YMMV).

and keep in mind that it looks like he said that over half a year ago. But your point is valid about value being added with the shipper.

hah, I never seen one like that before... didn't know such a set existed. With a little searching, I found it beautifully illustrated in this catalog page:

I love how they describe the engraving: "brocaded decorated treatment"

A very nice set without shipper sold last week for $285.

    But it wasn't me.
