What's new

What camera and photo gear do you use?

For work I use Pentax K10D and a few of the older istDSs.

I've always used Pentax SLRs for 35mm and have a herd of them from the old Spotmatic on up through the last auto everything film cameras.

When I was still using film I also used a Fuji GA 645 medium format. It's a great camera however it's no longer of practicle use.

About once a year or so I'll drag out the old 4x5 Speed Graphic and shoot a few exposures and play with them down in the darkroom.

Nikon D70
Sony A100
Minolta Maxxum 5

Just sold off the Mamiya 645J. Was a bit battered, still a great workhorse however. I may replace in the future. Not sure.

Wanting for wisdom
I'm mostly using a Cannon PowerShot SD1000 with some additional software that helps me. When I get real serious I have a Pentax that will fit the various lenses I've collected over the years but I've not used it for about 3 years . . . and I do feel a tad guilty about that. I used to lust after something like a hassenblad with film that was bigger than 35mm . . . so I could blow up my pics larger. . . . well larger than I could with 35 mm . . .

Nikon D300
Nikon 28-70 2.8 Beast
Nikon 70-200 2.8
Nikon 17-55 2.8
Tokina 11-16 2.8
and all the Extreme IV 8gb cards I can carry.

Canon 5D + BG-E4
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Minolta Maxxum 7 + VC-7
Tokina 19-35 f/3.5-4.5

Minolta Maxxum 5
Minolta 28-80 f/3.5-5.6

Carry them in a Tamrac Adventure 75, and they're usually sitting on a Bogen 804RC2 head and Bogen 055Xpro sticks. The legs are a bit on the large side, but the sturdiness helps with all the low light I do.

These days I have only the following:

  • 1954 Leica IIIf RDDA
  • Leica D-Lux 4
  • iPhone 3GS
The IIIf is just a museum piece at this point since getting film and processing done for it is such an expense and effort now. The iPhone is most used as it's always with me; but I use the D-Lux whenever I want quality images.

I've had a variety of gear over the years (Pentax, Nikon, Canon & Leica - both SLRs and rangefinders) but as my chronic back pain has gotten worse with time, I've migrated to smaller and smaller cameras. The D-Lux is the first small digital I feel can begin to approach the classic rangefinder in terms of use and image quality.

Playing around with my first DSLR a Nikon D40.... Have had enough of the stock lens and am on the hunt for a 17-55 2.8

Here's a recommendation you may want to check out. I used the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 back when I had a 30d and I really thought it was a great value for the price. Wonderful sharpness and color!

Here's a couple samples

Now of course if you're ready and willing to fork over the money for the 17-55, then by all means! That's a great piece of glass.

Thanks for that!... Now that's a damn good price for a 17-50 2.8 and some nice sample pics too.

What are these lenses' like, in terms of longevity?

While one of the big reasons lenses like nikons 17-50 cost so much more than something like the tamron is better weather sealing, if you keep dirt and moisture away as much as possible it should last for many years to come.
The other big reasons for higher cost is the nikon focuses silently and quicker
