I'd say go with the straight.
I quite like my shavette (half a DE blade) but only as a maintenance free travel razor. I find it a lot less forgiving than a straight, and nick myself with it much more often.
I'd say that for a new user, a properly honed and stropped straight would be easier to use, and since using one is your ultimate goal, why not start out with it?
Shavettes have their place (a lot of people might even disagree with me on that one) but they are not the 'training wheels' of straight shaving.
